Page 1 of Philips DVDR70 - Any Good?
Hardware Forum
These are now down to £279 at Currys (and probably cheaper on-line).
Worth having or should i wait / spend more? I see the next model (DVDR75) has i-link for a digicam but is it really worth the extra and how easy is it to connect my digicam to the DVDR70 to record?
Like the low price and not bothered about loads of features as long as it does the job and like the fact its Philips so will go with the rest of my gear but was hoping someone out there can advise me?
Also if any of you guys know a good supplier who`s cheaper (and preferably supply it region-free) much appreciated
Cheers
RE: Philips DVDR70 - Any Good?
NOT REALLY!
This forum will tell you all about the problems we 70 users have.
It records well enough off Sky (for no more than 2.5 hours without sacrificing picture quality) but makes a total pig`s breakfast of recording off videotape. It plays about with the contrast and bleaches out whites.A contact I recently made via this forum has exactly the same problems.Philips reckon that we both have faulty machines! There are also serious doubts about the 70`s long-term reliability.
I`m trying hard to get mine exchanged....is yuor mind made up?
The input video A/D converter uses the level of the sync signal to steer the video AGC. Many Video tapes- especially pre-recorded ones, have a low sync level to try and muck it up for recording equipment. I have no easy fixes.
RE: Philips DVDR70 - Any Good?
Philips say that the R70 does NOT have an AGC.This is why they claim that we have faulty machines.I tried to copy home-recorded VHS and SVHS tapes onto DVD.
I recorded much vhs onto dvd with my 880 without problems. But the long term reliability of any Philips product is questionable. The attraction of editable HDD has switched me to a Panasonic HS2,but even without that, the regular problems on the machines(see other threads also) will force a switch to anything non Philips, which at the moment means over to DVD-R.With that money I would go for a Panasonic. The only thing to hold you back is if you intend to use rewritable discs in other players.Write once -R is fine, but RAM-forget it,and no budget machines offer -RW.
