This may be due to the AGC in the video A/D converter which is steered by the level of the H-sync pulse in the video. Many pre-recorded VHS films have very low level H-sync pulses which TVs have no troubles with but it plays havoc with recording equipment. Disney films have this and a white video line where one shouldn`t be to mess it up for VHS recordingers. One hack may be to use a DV camera as an A/D converter and connect that to the DVDR recorder by firewire. My D8 camera will do this as it has a Time Base Corrector.

The input video A/D converter uses the level of the sync signal to steer the video AGC. Many Video tapes- especially pre-recorded ones, have a low sync level to try and muck it up for recording equipment. I have no easy fixes.
