connecting dvd to amp/receiver

i have finallly got a home cinema setup. it wasent too expensive but it was all i could afford and too be honest i wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

i did some research about what id need and how it gets setup etc. so when i asked about connecting the dvd player to the amp the guy said you can either use optical or coaxial. i told him my dvd player had both and i think he suggested optical. so i got the lead and didnt think anything more off it. i dont know what these leads look like.i set the equipment up today in the front room, this is not where it will stay, see my ariel post, but i wanted to make sure it worked and wasent damaged etc

after a bit off messing about and trying to sort the cable out i finally had it all connected, all that was left was the optical lead. i took the dust cap thing off but when i tried to put the lead in it was the wrong connect. i didnt want to force the thing in and break it so i looked at the next socket which was coaxial and this fitted. so as i said to make sure the thing worked i just put it there and tried it. it seems to work fine. but i just want to know which connect is the best because if i would be better off with the optical then i will take the coaxial back.

as money was a bit tight i could only afford a £100 amp. i was going to get the Sony STRDE485 but the guy said that they didnt do them that well at entry level. the other one they had was Eltax AVR200 at the same price. he said it had better features than the sony. i dont know the difference between the two, and as it is only budget price i was prepared to take his advice and get the eltax. have i made the right choice? some advice would be great before i set it up permanently.

many thanks.

You have a co-axial lead which is generally regarded as superior to an optical lead when connecting a dvd player to a receiver.

That was lucky!

Agreed, coaxial is definitely the better option.

Its a bit like saying coax cabling was better than Cat5e for networking ... NOT
