Page 1 of Widescreen picture too big for tv

I have a philips 32pw6526 widscreen tv with a pioneer dcs303 home cinema system. The dvd system is connected to the tv with a svhs-scart cable but the left hand side of the picture appears to be chopped when watching dvds. What I mean is if you watch a dvd in widscreen and then use the tv control to reduce the pic to 4:3 ratio you can see more detail on the left hand side of the picture, when you put it back in widescreen again it appears to expand so much that it cuts off part of the picture on the left. This only became obvious because when the dvd player on screen disply comes on you can see the first letter is missing/partly missing. If anybody has any ideas about why this would happen I`d really like to hear them.

Sounds like your tube isn`t aligned. An engineer can take the back off and sort that for you in your house.

It sounds more like RGB shift to me. Are you sure you`re not running the player through the RGB SCART on the TV instead of S-Video? If so it`s a common problem, and not one that can be easily solved. If you mess about with the engineer`s menu so that the image is correctly aligned for DVD, broadcast TV is messed up. It`s the reason I use S-Video instead of RGB on my setup.

It`s definitely running through the svideo scart socket, if I run it through the RGB scart the picture is poor, I was considering changing to to a straight svhs cable and running it through the TV svideo socket to see if that made any difference, not too sure what to do!

Easy to check.Change the output from RGB to S-video and see if the problem stops.Make sure the player and tv are both being viewed on the RGB or S-video sockets.Alternatively,and it may seem daft,but are you sure you have all the wide ratios set correctly and you are not looking at a ZOOM setting instead.I have also seen some tv`s with ZOOM settings where you can adjust the picture slightly,although this is usually up or down,not left to right.But you never know.
I have SKY DIGITAL,a DVD RECORDER and 2 other DVD PLAYERS,all outputting RGB,into a Panasonic set with no visible movement.Switching the DVD RECORDER over to S-video also causes no movement.

Our messages crossed.If the RGB picture is poor,go into the player menu and change the output from S-video to RGB,then run the Scart lead into the RGB Scart socket on the tv,this should give a perfect picture-although the shifting problem may still be there

How do you change the outputs from RGB to S-video and vice versa? Do you mean switch the outputs using the dvd player? the player I`m using is the pioneer dcs303 which only has an S-video socket, I didn`t think it was possible to switch the settings on this but i am kinda new to this game. I appreciate what you said about the zoom settings, I`ve been through that quite a few times just to double check but still no difference.

Go to the Video Settings on the Pioneer.There should be an option to change between RGB,S-video,and something else,maybe Video or Composite.Change to RGB(assuming you are currently on S-Video).You need to use a Scart lead with Scart plug at both ends,not the small 5p size S-video lead.Connect from Scart on the Pioneer to Scart on the tv.
I am not familiar with this Pioneer model,so I am hoping its not like some Sony all in ones and does not have RGB.If it does not,come back again

One thing I just remembered,most tv`s have only 1 scart for both RGB and S-video.You may have the output of the player on one setting,and be trying to feed it into the wrong Scart.If you are going into a Scart suitable for S-video,you may need to push your AV/AUX or whatever button it is on your remote twice.One push will set the tv to the Scart input for if it was,say,a vcr,and a second push changes it to S-video.
