Pioneer DV 464 - Help please!!!!!!

zak1981 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 19th August 2003, 13:15

Hi all,

I have just today taken delivery of my first DVD player, a Pioneer DV 464.

I have connected it up to my Grundig widescreen TV, followed instructions as per booklet, and I end up with Black and white playback!!!!

This is very annoying, and I have been trying to find out how to solve this problem.

The first time I switched on the DVD player, I got a colour Pioneer logo screen in red and black...then i put in a disc and everything was in black and white.

Then i took out the disc, and switched off the player, switched it on again, and now the logo is a weird grayish colour made up of lots of small black and white pixels.

I have tried a CD with Jpeg pics, and the same problem with that too. The photos are shown in black and white with small white pixels running up the screen....

I suppose this is a TV problem, but what shall I try?? I have a Grundig widescreen TV (32 inches) and I vaguely remember the same problem when a friend tried to connect his Playstation to it for DVD playback.

Is it possible that my TV (only 3 years old) will not playback DVD`s in colour???? or do I need to make an adjustment???

I am using the cable provided with the DVD player, and not a SCART as yet.......does this make any difference??

Help please!!!!!! Im waiting!

Zak

P.S the sound is fine.

I`m guessing here, but try the following once you`ve checked all the connections again !
Check what signal the player is sending to the TV
It will be a choice of video,S-VHS or RGB.
I would think if you are using the cables provided with the player you will have to set it to video. If it`s currently set to RGB or S-VHS,that could explain the B+W picture.
Failing that,I would get yourself down to your local store and buy a scart.Even if it`s a cheap one just now,at least you`ll know instantly if that`s going to fix the problem.
Remember to change the DVD player signal to either RGB or S-VHS when you use a scart.I would imagine your TV will accept RGB into your AV1 socket. My friend`s 6 year old Grundig has 2 RGB sockets, which is actually really unusual even these days !

thanks for the suggestions bowf...but problem still not fixed, heres what has happened so far:

I phoned Grundig and told them the problem, and they told me to check that the AV1 video setting is not on S-VHS, as you suggested. I did this and it wasn`t on SVHS, so no problem there.

I then tried a SCART and still it did not work......

I am sure that its a problem with the configuration of the TV, and I want to call Grundig again tomorrow, although their technical line is not very customer oriented, more like geeks at a phone.

But is there anything else in the TV setup I can try tonight???? Like I said, I had the same problem when playing back DVD`s on a friends Playstation.

Do Grundig TV`s have an inherent problem with DVD players?? Is this common??

I have another TV which I will try it on, a Toshiba. But i;m sure it is a prob with the Grundig, not the Pioneer DVD.

Any more suggestions welcome......

Zak

Is it possible to write down the possible video configerations on your TV & post them here. The DVD player is set for PAL not NTSC?
