Player gone to dvd heaven need help

tazz (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 10th August 2003, 15:47

Went to turn on my trusty old proline today and absolutely nothing, changed the fuse still nothing. I`ve had it for ages and it`s done it`s job bloody well but it`s not gonna be worth my while getting it fixed, so I`m on the look out for a new player. Consensus seems to be that the cyberhome 400 is the best budget player around at the moment, but does it do what I want

Must be multi region including RCE, what would you go for in position (
Either coaxial or optical audio out
be able to play dvd-r/CDR,
Ability to turn macrovision off would be ideal but not essential.

The only other thing I was thinking about would be an X-Box whats playback like on that and can it do what I want,

Any help very much appreciated, what would you do in my position (don`t really want to go over £100 waiting for the dvd recorders with hard disks to go down in price before shelling out the big bucks.)

Toshiba SD330.
£80 from Amazon. Great player.
Is multi-region straight out of the box (and I`ve heard it plays RCE discs, but I can`t confirm this).
Coaxial and Digital out.
I can play CD-R and CD-RW, but I haven`t tried a DVD-R (I`m sure it will work though).
I don`t know about Macrovision though. I would expect this will be present as with most players.

So I would go for this player, it really is a bargain :)

Wouldnt suggust x-box/px2 if just going to buy it for dvds not the greatest dvd players playback okay but a bit of waste unless thinking about getting for games as well and playing with it more then 30 percent of the time go for it, and wait for hd/dvd-recorder, but the xbox is going to cost you over £100 and last time i looked you had to fork out extra for dvd player capabilitie, The tosh from above is a good recommendation, also the cyberhomes are good though i would recommend the 505 over the 400 as has optical out and onboard decoder that you could stick speakers into with phono sockets, plays everthing with firmware update multi from remote not sure about macro and is about 59 pounds with 2yrs warranty from spin. tosh or cyberhome wouldnt go wrong in the interm

Cheers , not too fussed about the decoder as I`ve got a set up already, but where camn I pick one up I thought they were only sold at Smiths and theat they only had the 400`s. Any other suggestions I may be tempted by the toshiba (If it definately plays dvd-r`s) have heard goog things but if I can find something that will do the same but for £30 less I`d be happy.

I have just played a DVD-R in my Toshiba SD330 and it worked no problem.
I have seen the Toshiba recommended over other DVD players that cost twice as much. At £80 I think it is a bargain.

RicherSounds also supply the Toshiba SD330. I purchased 1 from them last week for £69.99 (multiregion). (I took a printout of the Amazon offer with me, & they reduced their price by £10.00!) It has played everything I`ve thrown at it: vcd, svcd, cd-r, dvd-r. A stonking machine. It looks good as well.

Been to special-reserve.co.uk and noticed a few ronin players that look like a good deal.
i.e the ronin P215 for £50.99, P701 for £54.99 or the P703 for £59.99. Does anyone know if these are any good, & what you get for the extra £4 & £5 in novice terms. :/
