Sony STR-DB 940 DTS Sound Problem

ewan robb (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 21st January 2001, 21:07

I have a Sony STR-DB940 amplifier hooked up to a Wharfedale 750 DVD player. The components are hooked together using Digital Co-ax. Eveything is OK when I play Dolby Digital DVDs however if I play a DTS film the amplifier does not appear to get a signal and I get no sound. The display on the amplifier displays the word "UNLOCK" when I select the DVD/LD mode. I cannot find anything in the instruction manual about what this means so don`t know if this is my problem or not. I have tried a different DVD player made by a different manufacturer and the problem is the same - no sound when a DTS soundtrack is played through the amplifier. Has anyone experienced the same sound problems when playing DTS soundtracks through the amplifier? Does anyone know what the word "UNLOCK" means when DVD/LD mode is selected?

Thanks and regards............Ewan Robb

Ian,

The word `UNLOCK` appears when no digital signal is being sent from the source to the AMP. The UNLOCK appears on my MD if for example my source CD is not actually turned on. The same applies to my DTS Amp, if the Wharfy is off then `UNLOCK` appears. If I am trying to play a DTS disc and have set the wharfy to DIGITAL PCM but not set the disc to play the DTS soundtrack then I get PCM 2/0 appearing on the AMP.

Hi,

I`ve got a Kenwood KRFV-7030D amp and when i try to output DTS from my Wharfie, it does not receive any signal at all. If a choose a DD5.1 soundtrack, all is fine (without changing the configuration of the player). I read some other threads of people having similar problems with different amps but the same DVD player : The Wharfedale DVD-750, so i can`t see the problem coming from the amp (brand new). I`ve got an engineer coming to check that this week and hopefully find a solution.

Adam/JC,

I have been surfing on the matter further. Depending on what site you visit it would appear that some of the original 750 players were not capable of DTS transmission but others say it was. I have sent an e-mail to Wharfedale to see if they can shed any light. Will let you know what they say.

Thanks again for your help.........Ewan Robb

Hi,

I checked on the Wharfedale site, and it does say that the DVD 750 and 750s do output DTS via digital outputs. So i contacted the support and they`ll send an engineer in 2 days. I also bought the player for that, so if mine does not output DTS i`ll ask them to do something....

JC,

I would be grateful to hear how you get on. If it is a DVD player problem then I will try contatcing them about the same thing. Do you know what model of player you have. I have a 750 player, second generation based on the information on the web, it will play RCE protected discs (The Patriot) but won`t play DTS soundtracks. My friend at work has the same player, his will play DTS but not RCE discs (the plot thickens), we think he has the first generation of the 750 player. The two machines must have different chips. I have also read that newer DVD players have to be enabled to play DTS discs, there is nothing in my instruction manual about this so I assume it is not required.

Good luck........Ewan Robb

Hi,

Just got an engineer sent by Tesco today, i demoed the fact that i cant output DTS on my new amp, and also showed the page in printed from the Wharfedale web site saying that 750 and 750s output DTS via the digital connections. He never met this problem before so took the player with him. I also insured him that lots of people having the player without the DTS logo on it were able to get DTS sound. I just have to wait now....

I`ll keep you informed, JC

I have to turn the volume up a considerale amount and then when switch to sat input or CD it blasts out at high volumes. Do you have any problems like this or any sugestions. Please!!!!!!
