Is Dolby Digital much better?

Sammy Valtino (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 21st January 2001, 17:30

Hi, is Dolby Digital much better than Dolby Pro-Logic? I`am thinking of buying the LG3350e with a decoder built in but can`t get one anywhere that is a resonable price (I.e below 250). I`ve found the Samsung 511 for 150 quid but does`t have a Dolby Digital decoder built in. I`ve got a Dolby Pro-Logic decoder in my Hi-fi so what i want to know is is Dolby Digital much better, and does it justify the extra cost? Cheera

The LG3350 decoder is only any good if you have 6 channel audio into your amp, or you have lots of amps!

AFAIK, it is only for earlier generation amps like my obsolete Kenwood 5010. Most new AV amps have DD and DTS decoders onboard. The chips only cost 2 quid FFS.

Prologic has left front (LF), right front (RF) and rear.

Dolby digital has LF, RF, LR, RR, centre and subwoofer option

DTS is like DD but higher quality (less audio compression).

Cheers, my Hi-Fi is the Awia Z-HTS30 it has 5 speakers which i use for the Dolby Prologic with my video and TV. It says it is Dolby Digital ready with the 6 inputs at the back. So should i get the LG3350e with on board Dolby Digital decoder at 250, or should i buy the Samsung 511 at only 150 and use my Pro-Logical decoder already in my Hi-Fi? Does Dolby Digital justify the extra price? as sound and Visual are what i`am really after with a DVD player, i`am not to bothered about MP3 play back ect.
If i get the LG with Dolby Digital what cables do i need to hook it up to my Hi-Fi/Amp? And how much do they cost? Cheers

I got mine from dabs.com for 180 quidish. There seems to be a wait, but it does seem to be the sort of unit you might `need`.

I went for the LG and sold my old CD player, so in the end, I upgraded for 150 quid. BTW, the LG 3350 uses mid-high quality analogue D/A converters (burr-brown PCM1716 24bit resolution), that should match the quality of any mid range CD player.

It is worth 30 quid extra, perhaps not 100 quid. The effects on Chicken Run `in the oven` are superb in DD as the flames light up around you running from centre clockwise thru 360 degrees!

>i`am not to bothered about MP3 play back ect.

I was/am.

>If i get the LG with Dolby Digital what cables do i need to hook it up to >my Hi-Fi/Amp?

Just get 3 lots of standard stereo phono leads of the appropriate length.

>And how much do they cost?

I got 3 5m lengths for about 36 quid.
