Page 1 of Thomson 7000 dvd/hard disk recorder

This machine caught my eye on unbeatable for £347.00
DVD player and 40Mb hard disk recorder.
Anyone any experience of them ?
I must admit I have got it into my head that Thomson is a cheap and nasty make,like Goodmans etc.
Having ditched my VCR I need an alternative recording source.
I refuse to pay SKY+ ridiculous money
I don`t fancy another box on my stand,so a seperate recording machine is a no-no
I don`t fancy a phillips +R recorder.

Is the Thompson, not another box. £50-00 less gets you the Panasonic E-50. That does everything the Thompson does & lots more (as I`m sure you know). ☺

I would get rid of my existing DVD player, so this would just take it`s place, but do 2 jobs instead of one.So it wouldn`t be an extra box on my stand.
The Panny would be tempting but,to be honest,I`ve seen so many threads on here saying "this disc doesn`t work" etc.etc.etc. that it`s put me clean off...
I`ve just read one saying that only certain types of -R discs work,and rattling off all sorts of makes/brands etc.
Sounds like too much hassle to me !

You`ll still need two machines if you want to permanently record from the Thomson. It`s only a hard drive recorder with a play-only DVD. You`ll need either a DVD writer or a VCR (which kinda defeats the object of higher quality recordings if it`s going onto tapes).

SKY+ is not ridiculous money.Its only £249 at the moment,although the £10 per month is annoying,no hard disc recorder comes close to the convenience and ease of use of SKY+,which is the only one to allow viewing and recording of 2 different satellite channels at the same time.A late summer upgrade will allow 2 recordings on different channels at the same time,no other HDD comes close.You get what you pay for.
Philips early recorders were troublesome but seem ok now,and there are many threads on here about Panny problems.
Of course if an extra box is a no-no,you have left yourself no choice.Its the Thompson or the Panny.

As soon as SKY+ drop the ridiculous £10 a month extra, I`ll consider it.

On top of the £400+ a year they get from me...

Bowf, it is a sad time when people are put off by misleading threads. I have put in all types of discs (Cheap unknown, dearer known) & have yet to make a coaster. I believe those people that had trouble were doing something wrong or used faulty discs. In VHS I have had faulty tapes...it happens. I usually buy all the latest gadgets & I have to say the Panasonic E-50 is one of the best buy`s I have ever bought. I am not going to reply again in case this thread goes the way of others. I will answer any questions that `Bowf` asks in relation to this thread though. As you have seen in other threads the Panasonic uses DVD-R as well as the latest DVD-RAM so you can time slip. (watch one programme whilst recording another). It is possible to record 6 hours. I prefer the 4 hour option on my 36" Picture frame Toshiba. (reckond to be one of the sharpest going). This gives me much better than VHS quality.Although hard drive recorders will do this you will be limited if you also have a number of programmes waiting to be viewed. On the Panny just insert another disc. I will be happy to reply to others about the Panasonic if they email me.

Surely there are too many threads about the disc problem for them to be misleading.As with all dvd recorders,+R,RAM and -R,they all seem to prefer quality discs to the really cheap ones.
And a hard drive has to be easier than a recorder for watching and recording simultaneusly.Even the Pace box offers 10 hours,SKY+ 20 hours,and all at broadcast quality.
