LOL....Clutching & Straws. Try looking at real facts & not biased opinions.
My friend from America came to stay with us this week & saw my Panasonic E 50. He said he saw the philips in the USA & was thinking of it. I demonstrated the time shift & told him & his wife the difference between the two. There is NO WAY he will concider the philips system now & was angry the Panasonic was not demonstrated. His wife (not a technofile) fell in love with the timeslip.
I know hard drive will do this but a hard drive could still crash, a DVD-RAM will not.
RE: DVD+R/RW GAINS MORE COMPANY SUPPORT
Until such a time as the authority that matters, the DVD Forum, recognises the DVD+R/+RW format officially, it will still be the one that struggles to make the grade, irrespective of its quality.
I agree, the more companies that sign up to it, particularly those who have signed up to DVD-R/-RW as well, the better.
Each format has its own pros and cons - I think it`s ridiculous to try to compare one with another. I think, for the consumer, the sooner it is recognised as an official format the better. At the moment, folk are rather cautious about plumping for +R/+RW. The refreshing thing about this system is that the price of the hardware is coming down a darn site faster than -RAM (which, I have to say, is nothing more than a souped up data storage system, time slip or not) and -R/-RW. Eg Argos are selling the DVR880 for £299 at the moment.
Budget manufacturers such as Mico, Daewoo, TYT, Apex, Sampo are all signing up to DVD+R/+RW and a few will have supermarket specials out later this year,. In my opinion, the DVD Forum will have their work cut out trying to defend their opinion to not officially endorse the format. When that happens, I do genuinely believer that people really will start siding with Philips. Well that and the attratcive proposition of a recordable DVD deck for less than £250, which will be the case when the Far Eastern budget guys start selling their wares alongside the baken beans.
Until then, chest-puffing from the different camps is a little irrelevant...

I welcome your comments as always Clayts. & you make a lot of sense.
But I cannot believe the average person will buy DVD recorders from Chinese manufacturers over the likes of, Panasonic, JVC,Toshiba, Samsung & Hitachi. Yes there will always be some but the majority of people will want a reliable system from reliable manufacturers. I don`t think that supermarkets will do HP & that will make a difference.Oh and as for a £250-00 deck, the Panasonic is not too far off that price now.
Another reason why DVD-RAM will win out is the Camcorder market. I have the latest JVC Digital camcorder & great it is too, but I will upgrade to a Hitachi (or any other make supporting it) DVD-RAM camcorder. Having been in home movies since 8mm believe you me the DVD-RAM is the next way to go. Easy editing play straight into a DVD-RAM recorder. No having to transfer via firewire or whatever time consuming way there is.
DVD-RAM camcorders. Just edit & play.

Why not? They already buy DVD players in their thousands from these manufacturers - what`s so different about recorders?

The Chinese decks aren`t necessarily less reliable than the big brands (many of which, e.g. Sharp and Hitachi, just re-badge Chinese players anyway). Also, even though the units themselves don`t have household names attached to them, they clearly benefit from the reputations (and generous returns policies!) of the major supermarkets in which they`re sold.
At the end of the day, there`s very little risk involved in buying, say, a Dansai deck from Tesco. There`s no extended warranty nonsense or returns hassle - you just stick it in your trolley with your beans and crisps, and take it back the following week if it doesn`t satisfy.
Mike
and take it back the following week if it doesn`t satisfy.
Guaranteed if it`s the + system.
RE: DVD+R/RW GAINS MORE COMPANY SUPPORT
As we see,Paull is spouting his usual nonsense and has no FACTS,only opinion to support his point of view.
He now says that TOTAL DVD magazine is biased toward DVD+R,and give no reason why except his own blinkered ignorance of the truth.
I think the fact the DVD FORUM have not backed +R officially, yet the format has taken the lead regardless, speaks volumes. One of the main non+R companies,Pioneer, have added +R compatibility to their rewriters.I wonder if Paull can come up with any +R company that has started offering RAM...don`t think so.
He says the article is clutching at straws, then says RAM is great for TIMESLIP because a hard drive can crash.Who`s clutching at straws now?
Any piece of equipment, from Dansai to Panasonic to Tag McLaren can have problems..nothing is foolproof....not even DVDRAM.
Paull`s arguments strayed from the sensible and logical to the ridiculous some time ago,and I am pleased to see some others who can see that +R,while not as sophisticated as RAM,is already the unofficial leader of the field ,for obvious reasons.Over to you Paull. Why does your above posting ask me to look at facts, not opinions, then proceed to give opinions, and no facts...as usual. As for RAM camcorders making a difference,it must be time for me to replace my vhs-c and video 8 vcr`s....oh,I forgot ,there weren`t any?

Convinced??Neither was I .....by this or the above OPINION.
