Looking for reasonable priced well built TV (perhaps Samsung widescreen?)

lievn (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 11th January 2001, 11:57

Well my girlfriend`s looking for a new TV.
I`m trying to convince her that it should be a 28" 16/9 or at least a 25" 4/3.
Can`t go bigger, because it wouldn`t fit into her brand new TV closet. :-(
But she`s leaning towards some trendy looking 21" sets (looks seem no. 1 priority???).

I was thinking of something like the Samsung WS-28W6VNG.
It looks nice, has a good price and should be reasonably reliable (4 years of warranty?).

Other brands that popped into mind were JVC, LG, Philips, Panasonic, Sanyo and Thomson.
Remember I live in Belgium and there are no signs of Matsui, Sheinder, etc...
I heared very good things about Toshiba but it`s very hard to find round here.

Any ideas or suggestions on the matter are very welcome.

dont bother with sanyo. picture quality is pretty poor. surround sound doesnt (i have 32" w/s 1999 model in silver)
however - it was v easy to set up - literally plug it in and thats it.

useless connectivivity tho` (1 s vid scart 1 composite scart - 1 aux av in)

A friend of mine has spent all day looking at budget widescreens in Comet etc. His ratings:

Bush/Wharfedale 28" - SH*T Picture / SH*TTIEST looking TV EVER! Rating 3/10
Goodmans 28" - The Worst Picture imaginable - Rating 2/10
Samsung 28" - OK but a bit short on features. - Rating 6.5/10

The Samsing is £311 and comes with a stand.

Personally, with reviews like this, I`ll be waiting for a secondhand one.

Thanks for the replies.

Well so far I guess it`s goint to be the Samsung (what features does it miss?).

Does anyone know something about the JVC AV-24WT2/4 ?

I got a Bush 28 inch WS from Aldi. Picture is not actually that bad (Panasonic tube and a German-made [Schneider??] chassis). Home Cinema tested one and gave 3/5 for picture I think.
It is an ugly telly though, big and black. I have a slight `whistle` on the sound on mine, just about audible - it only comes through the speakers though, not through the audio jacks so I think its curable.
For £229 it was quite a bargain though. I also have a Panasonic, that`s much better but was three times the price!!

Dont worry too much about the Bush`s slight whistle.
The Hitachi`s 523 positively howls!
