DVD Burner and Media advice required please!

Ben Franklin (Reviewer) posted this on Sunday, 27th April 2003, 18:13

Have finally got enough money for a DVD-Burner, but I`m really not sure which one to get.

It will most be used for when I convert .avi to DVD format, backing up DVD`s and for backing up PS2 and Xbox games. So with that in mind, which would be the best to get? Also, what is the best kind of media for this as well? Media seems so expensive so I don`t want to waste my money!

At a push I can go up to £250 for the DVD Burner! Cheers guys (and gals!)

I bought the Ricoh DVD burner first and was not happy with it, so i changed it to the Pioneer A05.
I have not had a bad burn with it, the only thing that annoyed me was that it ripped DVDs at a very low speed, but the latest firmware for it makes the drive rip at super fast speeds, burn ALL 1x media at 2x and is multiregion.

I have backed up my PS2 games on the cheapest media and they have all played fine, but my Toshiba DVD player can be a bit picky when playing movie backups....i narrowed this down to the software i was using.

You know you can,t do direct copys of XBox games?.....you will need a modded Xbox with additional software to extract an Xbox iso.

If you decide to go with this drive, here is the software i use for perfect results...

PS2/Xbox backups.....Alcohol 120% or Prassi Primo
DVD backups....Stomp Record Now, Prassi Primo and ripped with DVD shrink or DVDdecrypter.

Instant Copy and DVD2one also works fine but is so slow compared to DVD shrink.

DVD Decrypter is great for PS2 backups as well (if you use ISO read/write mode) - I started using it after Prassi Primo kept crashing on me, and it works a treat.

I have never tried using DVD decrypter for PS2 games, can you rip movies from the games, like the Final Fantasy ones?

Are you THE David James? Cheers for all your help guys.

Think I may go for the Pioneer A05, as I`ve heard good things about these. Was considering getting the Sony one which does both Plus and Minus, but its a little too pricey TBH.

Thanks again, feel free to give me any more advice, because I`m not ordering it for another couple of days...

I don`t think so, unless they`re in DVD Video format. All you can really do is copy the entire ISO (disc image).

Right, I`ve ordered the A05, but now I need to order the Media from SVP. Would I be okay with the "DATAWRITE "RED" 4X DVD-R"?

Cheers guys!

I am sure the Datawrite red will be fine, i use 4x Zero Defex discs which i bought from http://www.rivierapublishing.co.uk/acatalog/DVD_s.html

I ordered the 1x Zero Defex discs but they sent me out the more expensive 4x ones by mistake.

I have also ordered the and recieved the DATASAFE RITEK 2x and Nan-ya (1x-2x) DVDs which also copy and play perfectly from SVP.

Here is a link to the latest firmware upgrades.... http://www.dvd-recordable.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewsdownload&sid=2

Cheers Skirpydoink, I`ll get them downloaded! Think I`ll buy the Datawrite Reds. Just a shame they`re so pricey, eh?
