The new player will be a Progressive Scan model, so it is envisaged the picture will be as bright and shiny as a new pin.

Still waiting for confirmation of release date, tho` led to believe it will be available alongside the 450, rather than as a direct replacement.

What the hell are you going on about smiffy! You`re going on as if there has never been a new/updated model of an existing product!
No product is perfect and so it makes sense to improve upon them or add features for an increased price and a different market.

Chill dude, and by the way if you`re wondering how some of these letters are in lower case I`ll let you in on a little secret there`s a button labled "Caps Lock" it lets you change letters to lowercase - cool huh!.

The new one won`t be based on another company`s design (i.e. Sampo) so hopefully they`ll get an improved chipset. (Please ????)

Yeah, the new Encore comes with a gizmo called `progressive scan` which (without going into too much detail) gives a cracking picture. Not sure what the model name and number is as yet. (I`ve written to my `source` at Encore Direct about this, so you`ll know when I know, Lawless)

However, as Dukeyboy points out, it`s all well and good having the facility as long as the chipset isn`t blinkin` ESS again !!!

Read number 1.40 for details of progressive scan at :

I dont wish to p*** on yer parade clayts....................yes I do:P

but I think progressive scan has some thing to do with the TV`s resollution.

Have you noticed that DVD menu images have a very slight flicker up close, this is because the TV is showing a high resollution image.

A progressive scan DVD player on really works at its best with an expensive progressive scan TV clayts:((

I think the americans call this HDTV.

Cost yer a grand for one of these TV`s

HDTV and progressive scan are different - HDTV refers to the resolution whereas Progressive scan means that there is no interlacing.

A PAL tv image is refreshed 50 times a second - but the frame rate is only 25 frames a second. basically each frame is split into two "fields" of interlacing lines - this is that flicker you can see on static images.

Progressive scan outputs every line one after the other with no interlacing - hence none of that flicker. I`ve not seen a TV with this but they`re definately very expensive tho people say the difference is quite noticable.

in fact the only TV i can think of with progressive scan is that HUGE toshiba one, the 10grand jobby.... eek. though all players SHOULD be able to do it... it`s not that hard.

The New BIGASS HItachi do Progressive Scan, so I gather you are not going to get much benefit without a PS TV?
