Scan SC2000

Bob Jenkins (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 9th January 2001, 13:03

Hi gang..

I have a few questions that i would be happy if someone could help me with...

It seems that Scan have sorted out the problems with the latest batch of DVDs, so i will be phoning up and purchasing one shortly... I am going to buy a Schneider 28" wide screen TV aswell...

Do i need to buy the Scan`s AV6 Home Cinema Speaker System?
Is the AV6 HS speaker system worth getting?
What do i gain from purchasing the AV6?
Will i not get Dolby surround from the DVD with connection to the TV?
What is the AV6 like (quality/features etc)?
What is the best way to connect the DVD to the Schneider ws TV?
Is the schneider decent? I dont want to pay much more for a 28" wide screen TV?

Cheers for your help,
Wayne

1.You don`t *need* to buy the AV6 unless you really want to set up a 6 speaker surround system - it`s up to you
2. I`ve no idea about the quality - It might be better to wait and see if you really want 5.1 surround. You might get better value from buying separate amp and speakers from someone like Richer Sounds
3. a dolby 5.1 decoder and 6 speakers.
4. see 2
5. Connect the DVD with a good quality SCART cable. I haven`t seen the TV, but I presume it has at least 1 SCART socket - and probably it`s capable of taking an RGB signal through it. If so set the DVD to send RGB and the TV to accept it.
Then, if the Schneider can switch to NTSC you should also tell the DVD player the tv type is "multi" - You may just have to try playing a region 1 movie with the TV type set to NTSC and see if it works to find this out (if not set it to PAL and the DVD player will convert) To be honest the quality is fine even when converting, but in theory the fewer objects in the path the purer the picture quality should be.

6. Is the Schneider decent - others may be able to answer this better than me. All I know is that many years ago they used to rebadge Amstrad CPC464 computers so they may be quite low end. How much is the TV - you can get a Hitachi for £320 or a Toshiba for £348. The £280 Wharfedale in Tescos seems fairly reasonable too. See the thread "Cheap Widescreen TVs" in the general forum

I bought a Bush 28" WS from Aldi for £229, it is the same as the Wharfedale in Tescos. I think the picture is very good, but the sound is rather poor.

I looked at the Schneiders and I thought they were very good. Schneider are a major brand in Germany and the sets are made there - not in China like the Wharfedale. Also ASDA give you three years free warranty on the TV`s so I think they are a good deal.

I am also thinking of buying a Scan. Everybody says the Aiwa is great, but I had two faulty ones from Comet and got a cash refund. I thought about an LG, but in Which Magazine they say LG electronics are less reliable than average. Also the LG doesn`t have all the features I want. I am waitng to see how the people who bough Jan 5th Scans on this forum get on. If they say it is OK then I may get one.

Yes, Bernie I was thinking of doing the same thing, if there is not too much adverse feedback from the Jan 5th batch. I don`t really want to spend much more than £175 in view of the rapid change in technology.
