Page 1 of Blocky picture..
Hardware Forum
I`ve just got a new TV and sat down to watch Monsters Inc, supposedly one of THE best pictures around on DVD.
TV is 32" widescreen.
I was expecting to be amazed by the picture and at times it was.
There are times, however, when the picture is a bit blocky. I don`t mean really bad like maybe dirt on the disc. It`s more like (similar to vcd`s and svcd`s in fact) when there`s a large area of colour that is hardly moving, and due to compression, where the shade changes it`s not smooth but blocky. Very hard to describe but bits of colour seem to move with the camera.
If anyone has Monsters Inc. could you try something for me? Go to the very beginning of chapter 31. As Mike and Sully run through the red doors. The doors themselves seem blocky and the one on the right where it changes colour in the shade to a sort of crimson where it meets the wall seems more noticable.
If anyone understands what I mean or can reproduce it, can you tell me what it is? Is it a limitation of a DVD player ( the decoding??) or a `feature` of larger TV`s or is something amiss?
I was expecting beautiful constant colours. It seems more noticeable on slower moving `single` colour areas.
Cheers,
Ste
It`s not a Philips `pixel plus` TV by any chance?
What player do you have, I`ve tested this on my pioneer dv-525 and ther was no problem.
I have noticed it on shrek when shrek and the donkey are looking at the stars!
I think I have the same problem with very dark colours/textures...especially if the light flickers (when there are candles in the scene)..the background becomes `blotchy` and if there is no movement you can see the blotches come and go in some peculiar, randon fashion...Scene 6 of Gosford Park does this a lot (and a few other films I have)...got a 28 in Panasonic and a Scan 2000...no idea what it is, but I`ve tried three versions of the disk.
Feel free to correct me if I am wrong but I think this is to do with how well your player handles mpeg encoding. When the disc is compressed using mpeg coding it can result in compression blocking but some players show this up more than others.
I used to get this problem on loads of movies on a Tosh TV when using an LG player on the S-video input. Changed it to the RGB input which made a big difference, but I now have a Sony player and the picture is a lot better on either input.
Have you tried the other inputs or another cable?
It`s a Sony TV.
I thought too it was something to do with how good the player could decode the mpeg. Don`t think it is the TV because other pictures like the digital tuner (infact some bloody svcd`s!!!) are ok.
I`ve never had problems with the player before but it was connected to a 25" tv then.
Anyone else got Monsters Inc?
Alan, I think you`re describing what I`m seeing.
Would changing to RGB make much of a difference from s-vid? Thought it would be general picture quality.. The TV is rgb on scart 1 & 2. I presume it`s automatic selection.
Cheers,
Ste
I have Monsters Inc and checked the scene you said and cant see any problems at all on my setup. I would give RGB a try, what do you have to lose? Just make sure your player is set to output an RGB signal.
I think it already is RGB. Cable is a `big thick one` so presume it`s fully wired - that is also RGB isn`t it? Can`t find setting on TV - presume it`s automatic. DVD player is set to RGB.
When you pause the dvd at the scene mentioned above, the door on the right is noticably blocky..
Ste
Absolutely no blocking on mine at all. The picture really is excellent.
The only other thing I know to suggest is seeing if you can borrow another player from someone or perhaps a different cable.
