Calling ANY LG 3350 owner with a bit of bottle and a digital camera!!

Jimbo :oÞ (Elite Donator) posted this on Sunday, 7th January 2001, 00:12

Allright guys, I need some help.

Yep, you know I have an Aiwa 370, not a 3350..what you didn`t know is that I`ve found out a way to ENABLE the Dolby 5.1 setup in the menu!
NO JOKE!, Seriously, I can enable 5.1 setup!!!

However, I don`t have the components in my board to try setting it up correctly. Phono output connectors will be easy enough to come by, but the other parts (chips/electronic components) won`t, unless I can find their numbers and values.

So, the help required is...anyone out there who can get me a HIGH QUALITY, clear and legible picture of the Dolby decoder area of their board?
It`s right behind the Dolby connectors, in the middle of the rear area on the circuit board.
Any one who can, I would greatly appreciate it, and may be able to return a favour! ;o)

What about yerself Troll? Got a high enough definition camera?
(by the way, to get a clear shot requires removing the CD loading tray mechanism)

If no ones confident or got the equipment, I`d understand, just have to wait then and see if the service manual appears.

AIWA 370 (officially) ROCKS!!!!!!!

Can I assume there isn`t one then?
How about posting.."Sorry can`t help" all you 3350 owners out there?

That`s very interesting Jimbo. In that case I wonder if the Aiwa firmware was dropped on to an LG that VCD could be enabled without losing 5.1?

As to cracking my LG open again, I`m a bit reluctant to be honest. It`s just that it`s all nice `n` cosy in it`s cabinet now. Why don`t you take a display model to the privacy of the your shop`s store room and undress it? Surely seeing the naked LG in the flesh for yourself would be better?

I am suprised you are bothering to pursue this Jimbo. Even if you can get hold of the components it won`t be a simple procedure to fit them. Certainly not something your average Aiwa punter is going to be able to follow. As for yourself, I though you didn`t rate on-board decoding as an important feature.

However, if you are truely desperate I may be convinced to do the deed.

I have just ordered an LG 3350. If you still require this info by the end of the week (if it arrives) I will see what I can do Jimb:o).

P.S. will you be releasing the list of codes you have found and what they do ?

Because, due to the fact we don`t sell the Aiwa, I`ve sold out of the 3350!!
(did five in one day before xmas..thats pretty major in a plus £200 player for my store!!)

I don`t, but if it`s there, I`d like to have it, and it looks like a simple "drop and solder" job anyone can do. And I then thought of the "telly for the front, amp for the rear" idea that could be tried out.
Moreover, I`d like to see how much of the firmware from Aiwa to LG was actually changed!!
(see both our "Firmware Hack" displays on the sites Troll..apart from a few of the bottom numbers/letters being different, they`re pretty similar, and the revision numbers are almost identical (the MICOM), therefore, could I do more to an LG, say perhaps, enable VCD?..but for now I wanna find macro, then I`ll turn to the LG enabling)

And yes Croc, once I know, they`ll be here.
And I would greatly appreciate the pics, but if it is gonna invalidate your warranty, consider it carefully. I wouldn`t want you to be in a position to have to pay for a repair if something went wrong later on your unit.
Oh, and I do understand Troll, thats why I`m saying it`s only someone willing to take the chance for me! :o)
(I`ve had my Aiwa in so many bits that I`ll soon be a qualified engineer!! lol)

What about sticking all the bits into a Cornflakes packet, spraying it SILVER and sending it to me Jimbo ;-))))

What is the advantage of an onboard decoder??? I presume you wouldn`t need an amp or would you?? sorry haven`t got a clue about these things.

The built in decoder decodes Dolby Digital sound before it comes out of the player, that`s why it has the 5.1 connections on the rearside.
This way u can still enjoy Dolby Digital sound using a Dolby Prologic amplifier.

BTW Poncho what`s with all the silver????????

Sorry Lievn, technically INCORRECT matey!
Unless it`s one of the "New breed" of pro-logic amps with 5.1 inputs, then it will still only reproduce Pro Logic.

The advantage to onboard Dolby Decoding is that you can link one of the following:

1) Amp with 5.1 channel inputs
2) More than 1 hifi amp (bit fiddly)
3) Telly and amp combination for front and rear (even more fiddly)
4) Six "powered" amplified (active) speakers.

Basically, it`s like having CD player outputs three times!
1 for centre, 1 for subwoofer, and two each for front and rear speakers ( L & R)

Therefore, you could enjoy dolby 5.1 without having to buy a new amp!
However...if a new amp is on the cards anyway, then just get one with a digital input and onboard 5.1 decoder, and ignore anything I post about upgrading the Aiwa! ROFL!
