Freeview box - criteria & quick straw-poll

julianf (Elite) posted this on Monday, 10th March 2003, 13:30

Hi All - I`ve had a look at existing threads on the subject but they don`t seem conclusive. I`m after a Freeview box with 2 scarts and co-axial digital audio out...ideally for £99 but don`t mind paying £140 for the Nokia in Currys if it`s any good...(oh yeah, and do the One-4-All remotes work on these?)

What d`you reckon?

thanks
julianf

I`ve got the Pace box, we only get 1 channel !(bad area) bought one for my mother and it was totally incompatible with her new Samsung telly. Replaced it with one of those Recon. £79 Nokia boxes from Comet, which has a good picture and is reliable, but can be a bit slow on channel changing and has a plasticy remote.

Re. 1 for all remotes, we had our digital remote nicked and tried various remotes as replacements, none of them worked properly. Last year Argos had various remotes with the digital symbol, this year they have taken the digital symbol off the same remotes, so I am assuming there is a problem with digital and 1 4 all.

I've got a Panasonic original ITV digital box. It has 2 scarts and phono out. Its very reliable and the remote is sturdy (when my girlfriend and I fight she grabs the nearest thing, the remote. Its hit the wall twice and still keeps rockin).

The picture is very good and swaps aspect ratios with the touch of a button. If you can get a recon I would certainly recommend it.

No. I mean panasonic.

I have the following shiny letters at the bottom of my old ITV digital box

P-A-N-A-S-O-N-I-C

Ergo, my box is made by panasonic.

Actually i was arsed to check last night and they spelled

P-H-I-L-L-I-P-S

Which as you know spells `humble pie`.

Youd have thought id know what it said after clutching the remote in my sweaty palms for over a year.

Boy, is my face red.

I have got an ex ITV Digital Pioneer box it has all you are looking for 2 scarts and optical , not as fast as the newer boxes but there again I don`t want or need to switch channels every 3 seconds but it is reliable and never crashes.
Might be worth a look if you can find one for sale .
