PROBLEMS WITH A REGION FREE DVD FOR MY PS2...

flump (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 26th February 2003, 20:35

i need your help ppl!

i recently purchased a region free dvd for my ps2 (from a make called `blaze` who have a whole range of stuff)

well my region one dvds play, but they are in grainy black and white and i have no idea why.

i got my scart cable and everything set up fine.

the only thing i can think of is that maybe my tv isnt ntsc compatible.

i tried other scarts with more pins and other tvs but to no success.

my ps2 is a `30003r` model, and my tv (a few years old) is a `bush 2063 NTX` i think.

please help!!

It`s ur PS2 matey, probably not ur TV!! I have a DVD player Phillips 622 and a PS2!! Now my DVD player plays disc from all regions with NTSC with no probs!! Now i recently bought a disc to unlock my PS2, however, although it unlocked the regions, it only plays discs in black and white!! I beleive the PS2 transmits a weeker signal than a normal DVD player in regard to NTSC so u will need to use a newer TV that can translate it better!! If u bought a NTSC DVD player u will probably have no probs on ur TV if u have a scart connection at the back!!!

Er, are you actually using a RGB SCART lead? (The one that comes free with the PS2 *isn`t* RGB.) Do you know for certain that your telly accepts a RGB input via one of its SCART sockets?

If you`re getting a new TV soon it`ll almost certainly have a RGB SCART socket, and will be NTSC compatible too.

"I beleive the PS2 transmits a weeker signal than a normal DVD player in regard to NTSC so u will need to use a newer TV that can translate it better!!"

Not quite, although you`re (sort of) aiming in the right direction!

The PS2 outputs a pure NTSC signal when playing NTSC DVDs, whereas most UK standalone players output PAL-60Hz (basically NTSC standard video, but with a PAL standard colour signal). Many older tellies will not accept a NTSC input, but they will accept the "hybrid" 60Hz PAL variant.

All of this is irrelevant if you`re using RGB, because this completely bypasses the NTSC/PAL colour circuitry.

thanks mike for your reply :)

well, i have no idea about rgb/ntsc in general lol.
yes, im using the standard scart from my ps2, but i have tried others; gold ones, all pins, ect.
all to no avail.

what the hell is the difference then between a standard scart and an rgb? how much will an rgb be? are u sure that will solve all my problems?

as for my tv, i have no idea if it accepts rgb/ntsc or not, or if the scart socket will accept rgb signals...

its a few years old and has one scart socket.

(the type of tv i have is a `bush 2063 ntx)

so, if what u say is in fact true, then all ill need until i get a new tv is a rgb scart?

its no good asking ppl who work at these electrical shops as they talk out of there asses and say anything to make u part with ur cash...not one of them has helped me yet:(

A RGB SCART lead should only cost you a few pounds, if that. (It`s the same type of lead as is used for the original Playstation - it doesn`t have to be specifically designed for the PS2.) A RGB lead differs from the "standard" composite-only lead in that it has extra wires to carry the Red, Green and Blue signals.

The RGB cable will solve your problems, but *only* if your TV accepts RGB through its SCART socket (the instruction manual should tell you). If it doesn`t, then you`ll either have to wait `til you get a new TV, or buy a cheap standalone DVD player that outputs PAL-60Hz.

we had the same problem on one of our tv`s. it is a old ferguson colour tv. it was solved by using the component video lead we bought, and a scart adapter to plug the component lead into then put the scart adapter in to the scart on the tv. we also use it for our panny 32`` widescreen and a portable tv and it works fine on all of them
