HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

PeZmaker (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 2nd January 2001, 19:54

Alright, I need some help. This has probably been posted before, but I already have spent over an hour reading through the posting looking for one similar, and i`ve decided to do this the easy way (I hope).

I was given a sony DVPS360 as a gift, and have an older tv, a tv which only has the standard coax cable connection. Of course, the dvd player has EVERY connection but. Now, i`m a college student, and I have no money to buy a new tv. We all know what happens when you connect it up through a vcr *shudders*. So, any suggestions on how I can convert ANY one of the connections on the back of the dvd player to the standard cable coax connection of my tv?

Hi,

As far as i can see there is no way to do this because the signals would be incompatable and it would also defeat the object of using a DVD as the signal would become analog and very poor. However, in my few weeks of looking through DVD information i belive that it is possible to use the DVD through a VCR and remove the shudder. I`ll see what i can find for you. In the mean time ask some of the other guys/girls (esp. Ironduke and Jimbo -Really up on there choosen players, may have some ideas).

BYE!

Try contacting Combined Precision Components on www.cpc.co.uk. They have allsorts of gadgets that will allow composite & sound in and tv out. I seem to remember that the old video cameras came with such devices (Panasonic springs to mind ) ;-)

Hope this helps.

Ok - how about going to see the electronics department of your college if it has one - ask a teacher / leactuer / technician (and ask them very nicely) if they have any old VCR`s or satellite reciever boxes that have an RF modulator - this is the part of the circuit that inside the VCR (or whatever converts composite video to RF which plugs into your co-ax socket on your TV - this is only a small box (about two matchboxes type of size) - it would only take a few wires soldering onto this and a few walkman batteries and it will work - this is the VERY cheap option though - the quality wouldn`t be outstanding - but it should work -
if you want me to go into details then e-mail me (yevobls[at]moc.yalpog) and I`ll try to explain more !

Note - this SHOULD work but it`s hard to tell if any macrovision protection would have any effect - it didn`t when I tried it.

well, I know it`s possible, the signal from the composite needs to be modulated to the rf carrier signal. I`ve also seen a couple conversion kits, but they`re up near 100 bucks, and if I were goin to spend that much, I may as well save up a month or two and get a tv. BUT, I can`t do that. tuition. blech. Anyway, it`s possible, i`ve seen it done, just lookin for suggestions on how. And that *shudders*, well, that was me shuddering at the macrovision :) Thanks anyway :)

Firstly. inline Macro decoders range from £20 up to £60, but these`ll only work if you got a SCART or AV input on the video, then run through yer vid to the telly. Picture will be pretty crud though, as it IS analogue.

What size is the telly?

You can now get a 14" portable for under £70 with a SCART, a 20" at around £100, a 21" at around £120, and a NICAM 21" around £150.

I know these`ll be difficult on a student budget, but it`d be worth the saving up. even better if you can get to around £300 and get a half decent cheap 28" widescreen.

And what about leaning on the parents/close friends? hint on as an idea for a pressie! lol

AIWA 370 (officially) ROCKS!!!!!!!!!
(oh, and somewhere on here was a post that you can actually BUY an RF modulatoir for this purpose, but it wasn`t that expensive!)

Maybe a long shot, but maybe you could alter/butcher a playstation AV cable. It would need a small power supply, and the audio would be mono, but hey it might work !!!!! ;-))

Nigz - yeah - that box you mention in the Playstation cable is a modulator - since this post we have exchanged a few e-mails and we may have found the solution - hopfully he will post back here if it works.

Problem Solved

Hey everyone, just letting you know I found a solution. I went to our local electronics shop (no, not radio shack, blech), and just picked up a simple rf modulater. It had rca jacks in, antenna in, and rf cable out to the tv. Works great. I notice extremely LITTLE quality degridation from dvd through the modulater. Looks good, sounds good, works for me. Thanks for the help.

Pez

by the way, i`m sure radio shack has these too, the one I bought was $24, american.
