Hi i am looking at buying a budget Voxson DvD Player ,the two i am comparing have these features , but i am not sure if the are the same features just worded differently, or if one is better than the other .The first one says it has Digital output (Dolby Digital output i think) and 5.1 channel ready via rca out-put, and now is this the same as ,but worded differently or different to the other Voxson i am looking at which has Dts (Digital theatre sound surround i think) and Onboard 5.1 channel decoder , 5.1 channel digital output for dolby digital (ac-3)
Thank you for your help , i would hate to go out and buy one then find out the other is a better one As for price comparions between them both, the first one i detailed is sold in a package with a home theatre system for $ 400 au and the second is a single unit for $ 170 au
Thanks again Glenn

Hmmm Model`s ?

From the sounds of it the first 1 (Together with home cinema) has the potential to do everything the 2nd can do once it is hooked up to 5 speakers and a sub that do not need a decoder !

But the specifications of the Home Cinema system are important, it needs to be able to support DTS also.

Having an onboard decoder is handy if you want a cheap and cheerful way of getting surround sound.

From the descriptions you give, it sounds like both have on board decoders - the latter defines this specifically, but the former, by being 5.1 ready by rca (i.e. it has 6 phono sockets on the back to connect an amp and speakers to).

So the one in the package home theatre system will have a set of speakers and a subwoofer. In ther sub will be an amplifier for each of the 6 channels (front left, front centre, front right, rear left, rear right plus subwoofer for the low frequencies). It will probably be something like the 5.1 kist you can get for computers, although if you`re lucky you`ll get a remote control etc.

I think you will find that the one that mentions DTS will NOT actually decode DTS, it will just have the ability to pass the DTS stream to an off-board decoder.

Hope this helps!

The only point of having onboard decoders on a DVD player with 6 channel RCA output is to send the digital decoded signal to a pro logic analogue amplifier.

If you have a modern day amplifier there is absolutely no reason why the DVD player needs a decoder, all it needs is the digital output of Dolby Digital and DTS, which all players possess via digital coax or optic.
