Page 1 of 3 Phono RGB -> Scart
Hardware Forum
I have an X-Wave 1000k DVD player (www.labway.com.tw) and a 5 year old Sony Trinitron “25 TV. They are currently connected using a single yellow phono cable. The picture quality is slightly disappointing (as expected giving this method of connection). The DVD player has an S-video out but the TV cannot handle the signal, I have tried feeding it through the scart with no success. I was wondering whether it would be possible to feed the RGB signal from the dvd players phono sockets directly into the tube to increase the quality of the image. The X-wave outputs the RGB via 3 phono cables but my TV only has two scart inputs (one of which can accept an RGB signal).
I have a lot of questions so please be patient ;)
1)Does anyone know whether the RGB signal sent out by my DVD’s phono sockets is compatible with that of an RGB Scart?
2)If so, has anyone had any success with such an arrangement and what results did they find?
3)Can I expect to find huge improvements in picture quality?
4)Where can I purchase a RGB to scart cable? / how can I make one?
5)If the above is not possible, what else could I do to improve quality (without buying a new TV)
6)What does the Scarts ‘sync’ pin do? (I figure it must be important)
Many thanks to Everyone.

It should be with a compatible lead, however, this is the first time I have heard of RGB outputting via Phono.

no idea, never heard of this method and would be interested to hear other`s views on same.
3)Can I expect to find huge improvements in picture quality?
DEFINITELY!!
4)Where can I purchase a RGB to scart cable? / how can I make one?
Try Maplin. If you buy the correct cabling, a blank scart plug, and three phono connectors (five if you include Audio) and check your "Specifications" for the wiring of your Scart plug, then interconnect as appropriate. As this is a method I haven`t heard of, if you have a scanner, scan the scart specs from your instrucions, mail `em to me, and I`ll try to make you a diagram with the correct connections. (assuming you`re good with a soldering Iron)
5)If the above is not possible, what else could I do to improve quality (without buying a new TV)
Does it have a SCART socket on the player? RGB should output from that too (I assume it doesn`t for the 3 phono question)
6)What does the Scarts ‘sync’ pin do? (I figure it must be important)
Can`t remember, but I`ll ask my Engineer tomorrow! :o)

Many thanks to Everyone.
RE: 3 Phono RGB -> Scart
Gavin, I just hit the Labway Europe site and checked the 1000 player specs.
I cut this from the site:
"1 s-video and 2 composite video output
1 SPDIF digital audio output though coaxial and optical connector
Y Cb, Cr component analog video output
1 pair of main audio output, 1 pair of surround audio output, 1 center audio output and 1 Subwoofer audio output (Dolby Digital AC-3 six audio channel output )
1 pair of stereo audio output (Downmixing audio output )
Only thing I can see here vaguely resembling RGB is a single "Y Cb, Cr component analog video output"
Does it have 3 phonos where the player states "Component"?

Im sure my lb900 had component outs on it ,so if the 1000 does you need to try to get a cable with 3 phono plugs on one end and a scart plug on the other, but this way you would get no sound through your tv just a picture but if you have a dd amp this would not pose a problem.
RE: 3 Phono RGB -> Scart
To add to daz`s reply you could even try to get a 5-phono to scart lead (red, green and blue signals and left and right signals) this should in theory give you audio and video, happy hunting. ttfn

Thanx for all the replies, unfortunatly the component outputs on the Xwave are not RGB but YUV or something. Looks like i`ll have to buy a new TV with s-video.
As far as I know Gavin, thats the Component breakdown of RGB (in techie terms), so TRY the lead before changing the telly!!

Not quite. It`s the USA version - they use YUV instead of RGB. It conveys the same information but in the form of Y (luminance) + separate
U & V signals (colour difference signals). A resistive matrix + video op-amp is needed to convert this to RGB.
My Medion MD79050a (the £100 Aldi box) does the same.
I have yet to see a European TV with North american "component video" inputs ; I have seen them on some video projectors.
Therefore, I use the S-Video output instead - works very well & much better than straight Cvbs (single lead composite video, blanking & sync).
