advice needed budget £100 max!

PCFC (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 16th January 2003, 09:50

I want to upgrade my DVD player from a wharfdale 750s.

Essentially the replacement must be the same (eg multi -region,RCE compatible) with the exception of an added inbuilt Dolby/Dts decoder. It would also be good if it didnt have any problems with playing any discs at all!

I have drawn up a shortlist - which one should i go for? (Or suggestions of any better models that have my required specs?)

SVA D-2008 Multi-region.

Philips 634 (dont know if it can be multi-region and sketchy if it has an inbuilt dolby/dts decoder)

Thomson dth-210u (apparently has a decoder but i havent heard of any sucessful region hacks?)

And even a Cyberhome player? I dont know any specific models.

Can anyone clarify the details of these players? Id be most grateful if you could help me as i want to buy one in the new few days!

All the best

I was really interested in the SVA D-2008 to me it looked like a fantastic player from specs but I couldn`t find any reviews or actual first hand experiance of it, this put me off :( I am confused though as this particular Drive has a built in decoder ? did you mean that the exception was that it would have a built in decoder, and not that the exception from it would be a decoder ??

I ended up getting a £69 Pacific 1002 from ASDA as my budget bedroom model and I must say that for the money its excellent. Plays everything and can be made region free with a hack available on this site. But no built in decoder.

Must add though that if your looking for a built in decoder at this price range don`t expect anything great from it !

I think im going to go for the Thomson dth 210u model as it has what i want (I hope) and is only 79.99 so im going to go 4 it! Wish me luck. I know that inbuilt decoders are not too hot but i just want a basic surround setup - nothing too flashy!
