Page 1 of Toshiba SD220E (multi-region)
Hardware Forum
I am looking to purchase the Toshiba SD220E (multi-region) from Richersounds (£119.95) and wondered whether members could give me advice on if this and if is the best one within that price range or whether I should go for another player.
Secondly I have heard that it is better to go for a remote hackable DVD player rather than a chipped one as DVD`s may have some software applied to them at some point in the future to make life difficult for a chipped set. Comments please...Cheers
He who hesitates......
Just go out and buy this bargain, it`s multi-region and RCE free!! Any compatabilty problems in the future? By the time the next one arises you`ll have changed players and be waxing lyrically about how good this beauty was.
As you may have gathered...I have one (and it has S-video out)!!
Hesitate no more.

It is extremely good value. I buy R1 DVD`s in general and have had no problems yet. It is chipped for auto region selection (it is advisable to insert a non-RCE R1 disc before playing a R1 RCE disc).
As far as I`m aware Richer Sounds have plenty of m/region players (£119 sir! Suits you and me sir!!). Just don`t wear dark trousers when you watch it, the stains will show thru`, haw, haw (sorry).
Cheers guys..I`ll pick up the player tomorrow...I know I may not be upto speed with these things asyet but what is RCEandwhere would I pick up a non-RCE R1 disc?? I presume R1 refers to region 1....Thanks once again...
RE: Toshiba SD220E (multi-region)
RCE a little program on a DVD disk to stop you watching R1 DVDs on a
multi-region player [mainly players that switch region codes automatically]
also region 2 tosh can be made region free according to what i have been reading, with lots of positive replies
i copied this from the download site for the file that is needed.

What`s the use of a DVD player if it`s not region free? :-)
Thus, for those who, like me, have purchased this great DVD player which is the Toshiba SD220E, here is the firmware upgrade that will make your DVD player region Free.
Everything is explained in a readme file (Word file) included in the archive (created with Winrar 2.9).
Right click, and save as. File name is sd220e.rar
Enjoy! ^_^
I do not know if this turns Macrovision off, so you should test by yourself.
I have no way to know whether it will work for you or not, so please don`t flame me if it does not. All I do is providing you the file.
Jimmy...I really appreciate this...but what i can`t understand andI may be misinterpreating this but is multi-region different from `Region Free` ie the multi-region DVD player that I buy may not necessarily allow me to play those R1 dvd`s.....darn this is confusing....also any advice on the best scart lead to get...the guys at Richer Sound recommended a £20 one....
Cheers
R1 certainly does refer to Region 1. As for RCE (Regional Code Enhancement) discs.....generally about 95% of new releases are NOT RCE discs. It is usually stated when purchasing online (play.com for example). But don`t worry the Tosh SD220 is RCE compatable and will not give you problems. As I said before, just make sure that a non-RCE R1 discs was inserted (or played) before you insert the R1 RCE disc. All you need now is a good widescreen TV and a reasonable sound set-up and you will never leave your house again!
And further....multi-region and region free is basically the same thing.
If your TV takes a S-video connector then go for this. If not then buy a scart lead with gold plate connectors, around £20-25. Richer Sounds usually give you good advice.
Thanks Aslan...I`ve got a great widescreen...Toshiba 100Hz..with all the sound gizmo`s...so the DVD is bound to complement it no end...whats nextis to build up that dvd collection...any good sites to get good value dvd`s...
