Toshiba SD220E - R1 disc playback a bit suspect

the-tatester (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 28th December 2002, 16:11

Hi there,

I have a multiregion Toshiba SD220E player and it seems that when I play R1 discs the picture looks slightly jerky as if there is some sort of frame loss going on. I`ve looked on various threads to see if there has been similar occurances and I can`t find anything (so far),

At first I figured it may be down to the fact that R1 discs are NTSC but I have a lot of NTSC vcds/svcds and they play smoothly. I also have region 4 dvds and they play fine aswell. I`m all out of options at the moment and I can`t think of anything else it could be. I`m using the standard phono jacks and NOT a scart lead. I`m not sure if this makes a difference to playback.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated :-)

Thank you

Can`t you switch the output to NTSC? Should switch between PAL, NTSC, MULTI.

Not sure if this helps but...

Mine seems to play R1 fine but the counter on the front is all over the place, ie it does not count up in seconds of equal duration.

Just thought id share that.

The only settings are either PAL or AUTO, using the AUTO setting allows the player to automatically switch to NTSC if an NTSC encoded disc is used. My vcds and svcd which are NTSC format are fine under the AUTO setting but it seems that the R1 dvds are not.

Hope this has been a bit more helpful.

Thanks for the reply by the way :-)

Seeing as you are using phono connectors and not a scart lead, I assume you have your Video Out setting set to Video and not RGB?

But to pefectly honest you are much better off purchasing a cheap scart lead, it will give you a better picture.

Cheers for the advice there :)

You`re right to assume that I`ve got my video output set to `video`, if I get a scart lead and use the RGB video setting will this improve the playback on the R1 discs?
