I expect someone with a lot more tech knowhow than me will enlighten you better but here`s my shot anyway, (not just cos I cant sleep).

IMHO it depends on your DVD player, if you have an ordinary job like mine (LG 3300D - el cheapo) there are no speaker jacks. You have to have your sound through the tv or connect the 2 Lineout leads to your amp!

I really don`t know about the more expensive DVD players out there. Maybe some of them do have internal amps and allow you to connect speakers and those big sub woofer thingys you hear so much about.

I suspect if you do plug your speakers directly to the back of your player then they will work but your dvd player simply decodes Dolby Digital 5.1 and does not amplify it. So the sound you get will be greatly reduced. What you really need is an all in one sound system which amplifies/decodes then connect your DVD player to that. The speakers then tend to come out of that all in one device. The oter alternative is sorry to say get an amp and surround speakers with a woofer. To get ideal sound for home cinema theatre system u will unfortunalely have to go for one of these options. The DVD players simply decode 5.1, but then again amps decode and amplify. I dont know or heard of any player which homes an in built amplifier.
Hope this helps, in terms of sound system packages there are plenty depends on your budget, you can check out places like Richersounds (www.richersounds.co.uk).
