Page 1 of PHILIPS 950 or 701 ???
Hardware Forum
I`m a DVD newbie and was wondering whether I should go for the Philips 950 (which is an older model and more expensive) or the new 701 model? Is the £75 price difference worth it? Is the new 701 hackable? Any info is greatly appreciated.
There must be someone who`s got some info on these models? Which one should I go for? Please anyone?
I would go for the 701 because it`s cheaper and it more recent.
If I`m not mistaking, it`s almost like the 711 only with a bit less features (but don`t ask me what).
It`s about time that Philips update their webpages....

Thanks for the reply! But I`m still not 100% convinced... The specs of the 950 are pretty good. But like you say it`s a older model and i don`t know what the 701`s specs are like. Hmmm... if anyone else has an opinion, please do not hesitate! Thanks.
OK, I try my best.
The main difference is that the 950 is multichannel and the 701 is not.
This means you can have "Dolby Digital" decoded 6 channel straight to an amplifier with 6 channel input or 3 stereo amplifiers.
Or, in case you have an amplifier/dolby decoder you can simply connect it via the digital connector.
Anyway, the last option is also possible with the 701, so that`s no advantage.
Another difference is that the 950 has 2 scart connectors. This is done for people who have TV`s with only 1 scart input. This way they can connect their VCR to the DVD and then the DVD to their TV.
Extra 950 features: "EasyLink" (P50), "smart-picture" (color setting)
Extra 701 feature: it plays SVCD ;-)
Conclusion:
If you have a TV with minimal 2 scarts and you have a dolby decoder/amplifier or don`t add value of Dolby Digital / DTS multichannel surround sound then go for the 701!
Thanks for your help! It`s appreciated. Yep, I`ll probably go for the 701.
Thanks...
