Philips DVDR880 cheap for a reason ???

Bowf (Elite) posted this on Monday, 11th November 2002, 10:27

Thinking of buying one to ditch the video and tidy up my AV stand.
However,I went into the bargain bucket forum and someone is saying Philips are selling them cheap to boost sales of an " outmoded format "
This person is saying the 880 is DVD+R and you should look at DVD-R instead.
What the bejesus is the difference and what the flippin `eck is he on aboot ??

DVD+R is the media that the Philips range of DVD recorders use and DVD-R is what the Panasonic range use. One will not work on the other.
It has to be said that that the DVD-R disc are currently cheaper to buy but recent months have seen a huge fall in the price of DVD+R discs so it wont be long before theres little difference between the two.
I bought a Philips 880 a few months ago and have been well pleased with it. I choose this one over the Panasonic as I had read that the DVD+R disc are compatable with more DVD players than the Panasonic, and the cost of the 880 DVDR was alot lower than the nearest Panasonic.

I have the philips 890 which is almost the same as the 880 the picture quality on dvd playback is excellent as is the sound quality, both machines recieve great reviews in all the magazine tests and are always rated as a "BEST BUYS" I would buy the 890 as i have, with 6 hours recording time and i link for digital camera transfers. The philips dvdr 890 sells for £ 469 at Richer Sounds a great bargain for this money as it is also multi region.
