Some advice needed on £200 players please

Barton (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 12th December 2000, 08:49

I am going to ask the $64,000 question.

I would like a multi region player (preferably with macrovision defeat) for around £200 (unless somebody can convince me to push the buget a little higher !).

I have narrowed my decision down to the following:

Scan /Manhattan 2000
Aiwa 370
LG 3350
Wharfedale 750
Encore 450
The NeoTek 3000 £175 offer machine

Any advice on narrowing these further, or even any other candidates would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I have seen that Comet has a tiny Panasonic portable player for £300.
a. Is it any good?
b. Is it hackable?

Yet another Q, how does the picture quality of the Samsung 709/ Thompson 3300 compare with the above players?

Thank you in advance.

If you follow these threads regularly you will note a few trends about which are the "better" players.
IMOH I would not entertain anything less than the LG or at a push the Aiwa. I have an LG myself and have been nothing but impressed with it. It doesn`t have macrovision disable on it but an in-line decoder can sort that out (they are available from most electrical specialists) for about £30.
Don`t let Dukey blag you about the Hitashit 505, I`ve had bad experiences with that player.

The picture quality on the LG is outstanding, I have not found any evidence of pixelation or anti-aliasing on any of the discs I`ve played, irrespective of region. The hack is a doddle as well and is the same for the Aiwa!
Respect for the Laser Guru!

The Encore is only £169.99 now from Amazon.co.uk... even better value for money...

Barton - avoid the Neotech like the plague : it may well be a scam (see my comments in the thread posted on Sunday about the Neotech.

Macrovision defeat (at least the working variety) on the Encore 450 is the only thing you won`t get - everything else fits in. If Amazon are banging them out at that price, get one, mate !

Acolyte!! You Blackguard!!

Can I remind you which player that hack was found out for?!?!?

It`s the AIWA hack, not the LG, therefore the AIWA is the god! :oÞ

But seriously, two players: Aiwa 370 & LG 3350
Pros/cons:
AIWA / LG

VCD playback from CDR / VCD only from originals
Under £200 / Just over £200 most places
no freebie / (soon to stop) free walking with dinosaurs
No dolby decoding / on board dolby decoder

http://aiwaownersnetwork.tripod.com (my aiwa site)
http://members.tripod.co.uk/ittroll/ (Troll`s LG site)

Compare them both there. if the link above to troll`s site is wrong, the one on my site works.
And that from a guy IN the trade! ;o)

AIWA 370 (officially) ROCKS!!!!!!!
