Faulty Tosh 210e

spireite (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 21st October 2002, 16:32

I seem to have developed a sound fault on my DVD player.

I had it wired into a Sony Prologic hifi system, and though I`m not convinced thats buggered it up, it may have. I

Symptoms are that the audio signal coming out of the DVD player is very quiet on the volume, and even turning the TV to max its still not loud enough, but anything with bass the speaker just can`t handle it properly.

This didn`t use to be the case.

Any suggestions are welcomed, but I suspect a repair (probably expensive) or a new machine are likely. Any one experienced these symptoms before?

Cheers

This is exactly what happened to my 210.
Halfway through a DVD a faint ` pop ` and the sound all but disappeared.
Picture perfect, next to zero sound.
I took it back to John Lewis and exchanged it for a Pioneer 444 ( after a verbal sparring session with the manager who wanted to repair it ).
Machines only get one chance with me...they break down and they get binned and I move onto another manufacturer. The hell with repairs when my confidence has been shattered.

Is the front display working? And is the sound muted or low audio?

Oh yeah - that`s a good point
My 210`s display did go awol at the same time as the sound. I forgot about that.
I don`t know how you differentiate between muted sound and low audio. When mine went ` pop ` the sound was still there, but really really really low.

The front display is still working fine actually.

What I have yet to do though is try it with an optical connection to my VS-10 - that is currently boxed since my move - no room for it at the moment. This is on the assumption that the 5.1DTS tracks are squirted down unprocessed.

The sound is there, but it has no volume. I`ll try the optical link tonight and get back to you. If its ok through optical I`ll stick with it - if not, then new machine I guess.

Machine is 15 months old according to my receipt - sods law!

Update!

As suspected, the digital out is not affected , so hooked up to a DSP will do nicely!
