SETUP HEAD-ACHES

Chris Barham (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 3rd October 2002, 11:54

OK GUYS NEED LOTS OF ADVICE ON THIS ONE.

THE MAIN QUESTION IS, HOW CAN YOU TELL WHEN YOU HAVE GOT THE BEST SOUND SET UP POSSIBLE. I MEAN LEVELS, BASS, POSTIONING ETC. IS THERE A DEVICE YOU CAN BUYS TO SEE IF EVERYTHING IS SET AT OPTIMUM LEVELS.

I OFTEN FEEL MY EARS LET ME DOWN. ON THE TEST SIGNALS I CAN NEVER TELL WHICH IS LOUDER THEY ALL SOUND THE SAME, BUT WHEN I PUT A FILM ON THE LEVELS ARE OFTEN ALL OVER THE PLACE SO I SPEND SO MUCH TIME TWEAKING THEM FROM FILM TO FILM.

PLUS THE SUBWOOFER. WHAT IS THE BEST SETTINGS, I HAVE A PARADIGM PDR10, A GOOD SUB I FEEL, BUT I CAN NEVER BE SURE IF I HAVE THE BEST SETTINGS ON IT OR ON MY AMP WHICH IS A YAMAHA A5. WHAT IS LFE, ETC.

HELP AND ADVICE NEEDED. THANKS

CHRIS

Hi Chris,

I hope I can help :-

Re sound settings (treble, bass etc) :-

This should only really apply when listening to STEREO sources ie when playing music on redio or CD and it is really up to you which settings you prefer. When watching a movie, its advised to use one of the presets Action, Drama or whatever your amp allows in conjunction with the film. I have a Pioneer amp & it selects the prefered sound on its own but primarily it chooses 5-D Theatre which sounds great. I can however sympathise with you as sometimes movies have too loud background music so you turn the surrounds down but sometimes the surround is low, if so, I suggest turning your surrounds up & your fronts + centre down but increase the main volume, this way the surround are loud & still crisp otherwise im affraid it up & down for most films

Re LFE - this means LOW FREQUENCY EFFECTS & you sjould use this adjustment if ultra low bass from a DD5.1 or DTS movie distorts the sound from your main speakers. Try this link http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_7_2/feature-article-misunderstood-lfe-channel-april-2000.html

Hope this helps mate
