Recordable DVD

OK this is an impossible question, but what`s the betting on the future of recordable dvd - Phillips, Panasonic or the others? I`m interested in getting some of this technology to do a bit of archiving but I`m a veteran of format wars in the past (betamax forever!) so I know the costs of getting it wrong.

Ok, I`m no expert so I`ll probably get shot down in flames, but I had the same quandry a couple of months ago. In the end I went for the Panasonic system of DVD-RAM. This was mainly because the DMR-E20 recorder got far better reviews (in general) then the Philips systems (and was only £499. The DVD-R capability ensures backwards compatability with most existing and future DVD players. If you are archiving, your unlikely to want to archive to re-writable media (I guess!).

Something else I`ve just noticed too, is that Hitachi seem to have gone the DVD-RAM route as opposed to DVD-RW with their new DVD camcorder. That makes it about 2 all for the different media I think.

Sorry if I`m talking crap, but thats just my version of the truth - hope it helps!!!!

What`s the quality like? My first DVD player was a Panasonic so I like their kit. I`ve never been keen on Phillips equipment.

You don`t like Philips equipment? but they invented CD players!, not to mention the highest resolution CRT available in Europe...
Anyway (and ranting aside!), I don`t think a format war actually exists... Sure, both companies want to sell the most and have the bigger market share, but if both are compatible with DVD-Video, then the only way one can become truly obsolete is if DVD as a whole dies...
I know from personal experience that DVD+R`s play on 3 out of every 4 players (because I`ve lent them out to all and sundry). DVD-R is slightly less compatible because there are some extra editing options which infringe on the DVD standard. Future players will probably have no problem spinning the Panny/Pioneer burned stuff, so I don`t think it matters if you pick +R or -R...

Snafu,

The picture quality is superb to my untrained eyes. Bought or rented DVD`s are crystal clear, even though my tele ain`t as good as it should be, and the video I transfer from my Sony digital camcorder is excellent.
