Cheap Multi Region for Non Techie

Bangy (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 7th December 2000, 20:24

Sorry, I know there are several posts with similar questions, but I hope you can help me out anyway. I need a multi regional DVD player for my wife to play movies from Thailand and UK, plus VCDs and music CDs. MP3 would be nice. But the main thing is simplicity - just put in any DVD and no hacks if possible. She is not a hi fi nut, but good quality picture is important.

So far 4 have caught my eye for under £200:

Eclipse DVD 595 from Richer Sounds
Pioneer DVD 595 from Richer Sounds
Samsung 511 from Techtonics
AIWA 370 from Bennetts (hard to tell from the AIWA nuts whether this is as good as they make out!).

Any help welcome, as I need to get the Christmas present now!!!!

Well I had a Scan and sent it back for refund due to various problems. I took my `Problem Disks` to Comet with region hacking info for the Aiwa 370. They let me perform the hack (very simple) check all my disks (Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition Region 1, Some mp3 disks & VCD`s).

All disks played fine. Put their machine back to region 2 and bought a new one off the shelf.

Well, I wasn`t an Aiwa nut, but I guess you could say I`ve been converted.

A nice little player ... go for it

You Blackguard!! Aiwa NUTS??? I`ve got a good mind to tell you to BUY from richer sounds!! :oÞ

Naa, I ain`t that vindictive! lol

The Aiwa IS all I make it out to be!
SERIOUSLY!!
Take a look on my site and judge for yourself http://aiwaownersnetwork.tripod.com

And just for reference, these are my previous players to the Aiwa:

REC 3000 (from Britannia music) - Good player with no region hack, but bad layer changes (pauses for ages), sent it back!

LIMIT JDV300 (richer sounds) BIGGEST PIECE OF CRAP ON THE PLANET!! RETURNED TO RS ONE AND A HALF HOURS AFTER I BOUGHT IT!!

SAMSUNG 709 (had 2 Richer Sounds & Currys) Currys unit had defective sound. Richer sounds unit failed after two months. Both had slow layer changes and nothing spectacular in the picture playback. Plus side was easy to macro disable. Both returned to relevant suppliers.

PIONEER 525 (Richer Sounds) Chipped multi reg, SEVENTY QUID more expensive than their website. Fantastic picture, but slow layer change and scraped a disc in the tray!!??!!

LG 2280 (Currys) No CDR playback, and needed a hardware mod. wrong mod received so player out of action awaiting replacement IC. Good quality unit bar the CDR thing.

AIWA 370 (Comet) bought as a temp replacement for the LG, and has impressed me so damned much it has REPLACED IT!! So when I get this chip, theres gonna be a cheap multi region LG for sale!

AIWA 370 (officially) ROCKS!!!!!!!

I`ve had the eclipse 595 from RS for a month.

plays dvd r1 & r2 (havn`t tried others) no macrovision so you can tape movies, plays cd`s , vcds and svcd`s really happy with it.

has dolby digital and DTS

Only cost 159 quid plus extra for a decent scart lead.

Do not know how it compares to others but RS will let you use it for 14 days and then you can return it for a refund if not happy.

Bought mine from Bennetts Online. Box is labelled "Upgraded to Multi Region" by Aiwa and the remote hack also works. For £168, if they`ve got one in stock, I wouldn`t hesitate

Must be a Tripod problem. It works when I check it, but there was a point it kept returning "connection closed" or somethin like that!

Try it again: http://aiwaownersnetwork.tripod.com
