Portable dvd player - phono connections ???_

Sconie (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 26th July 2002, 18:23

Hi Guy`s.
I purchased a portable dvd player and screen for our kid to watch on the move and for me to use as a backup when the dreaded soaps are on, however it only has the three phono out jacks and an s-video out on the back.
As I am used to the lush sky and dvd picture I am getting now, I was hoping someone can suggest the best lead I can get to inprove the picture, I gather the yellow video lead is why I get a washout looking picture.

Many thanks in advance.
Sconie.

Hi Sconie,

I`d guess you`re talking about the composite video output on a phono connection - right? Well, it`s best to stay away from using that unless you really have to.

Your best bet would be to get hold of an S-video lead - you`ll notice a much improved picture, especially the colours. Depending on what connections you have on the TV, S-video leads can either come terminated with another S-video socket or a SCART socket. A decent one (make sure it uses high purity Oxygen-free Copper or OFC) should only set you back £15-20. A lot of guys/gals on this site will steer you towards B-tech (www.beyondhifi.net) which I haven`t tried but they look OK. Otherwise look out for IXOS, Vivanco, or Monster Cable which you should find fairly easily on the high-street.

One thing I should point out. The S-Video lead only carries a video signal so you`ll still need a phono-to-phono connection for the sound.

Hope this helps you out.
