im gonna get a ex rental 32" widescreen and its £299 for either a sony or philips tv, not sure on the model but in general which is better for features and quality?? sony is over rated/priced most of the time but usually is better quality

anywere i could shop online for these kind of ex-rental tvs??

(im buying a exrental cause i bought one 6 years ago and works perfect but the last 2 tvs i bought from dixons broke in no time... these news tvs are built to last a year or so the parts are absolute crap)

Most of the main brand ex-rentals are the same as were on sale in Dixons at the time!

You appaer to have answered your own question there, seriously though the main problem with ex-rental is that most of the punters who rent them generally don`t give a rat`s arse about the set and treats it accordingly. Instead of looking for a make of tv, look for a tv that has been looked after (when you have looked at a few you will see the diferance) the remote should not look like it`s been used to stir cups of tea but the remote in the shop is not nesseseraly the one that spent it`s life with the tv. You are right to stick with a main well known brand of tv as if you do get a problem in the future you will be able to get someone to look at it for you.

Sony are most definatly not over rated, overpriced maybe, Sony are amongst the best. Philips after sales is a joke, their TVs have never been as good as SONY.

This may or may not be relevent, but my rented 32 inch widescreen Phillips has just gone belly up. The service engineer didn`t even try to repair it as he thinks it`s probably the tube. He did say that he`d had a reasonable number of broken Phillips tubes.... The telly is about 4 or 5 years old ...

In my experience DO NOT go Sony. Sorry to disagree but every TV, or video for that matter has proved very unreliable.

Would never buy anything Sony again.

Good Luck

I hope none of you buy our Hitachi that`s going back this week to Box Stupid. It`s been in twice to repair the Pro-Logic, and come back twice with `no fault found`. I now know that the connector that switches on the surround amp is dodgy, but the outcome is that we are getting a new set after my other half had a good moan at them.

The set originally came from a local dealer who was much cheaper than the majors, but they shut down and gave the business to BC. We carried on paying the same rental.

I suppose that as long as you can get some sort of guarantee with an ex-rental and find any faults before it expires it could be a big deal.

Nice to see that the Sony brainwashing system is still working ;-)

One of our replacement TVs was an old Sony 28" and it was crap.

The choice was between Sony & Philips, Sony is the better picture & is far higher as far as reliability is concerned. I myself have the 36" Toshiba Picture frame TV. BUT I liked the Sony as much & my choice would be between SONY & TOSHIBA. As Sony are a little dearer for similar quality I went for the Toshiba. Of the choice given & price concerned the SONY wins hands down. It is not brainwashing, just plain old Fact.

I hope you noticed my winking smilie on the brainwashing comment.

I accept that Sony make some very nice kit. Their design is some of the best and they are very innovative in their technology. They also have a good marketing department. I just think it`s too much of a generalisation (?) to say they have the best quality and reliability (for the price).

I know people who will always buy Sony. It`s made even easier by them having their own shops.

Personally, when I`m buying kit I`ll read the reviews (as many as possible), read the forums and check the prices. If Sony come out on top then that`s what I`ll go for.

I think that the only Sony kit I have is a very old stereo amp that I inherited from somewhere. It may get pressed into service some time.
