New JVC widescreen TV - advice please.

Hi y`all,

I`ve finally found the courage (and money) to get myself a widescreen TV. It`s the JVC AV28T25EKS flat-screen 28" bought from Costco for £500 including 3 yr. warranty (had been looking at Philips 5407/6006 but the JVC`s picture seemed significantly better). I`ve got it home and all set up and it`s absolutely stunning. Watched "The Nightmare Before Christmas" on it lastnight and it was amazing!

Now, being a newbie to all of this, I just wanted to check something. I`ve figured out all the zoom modes and got everything the right shape & size, but I`ve noticed that when watching in 4:3 (in the centre of the screen), there is some curvature at the edge of the image, so that the overall picture is slightly narrower in the middle and wider at the top & bottom. It`s not a major problem, it`s still watchable, but it is noticeable. Similarly, when watching widscreen stuff, objects on-screen which are vertical (e.g. lamps/doorframes) also seem to curve slightly when at the edges of the screen.

Is this supposed to be happening (has 4:3 TV got this curve built in to fit non flat-screens), am I missing a setting, or is it a fault?

Thanks,

Chris.

What you are seeing is down to the geometry presets on your tv. Most tv`s can be altered through their service menu, Which can usually be found by pressing a sequence of button`s via your remote.

I would strongly advise anyone who is thinking of going down this route to precede with caution, and write down all presets,(better still don`t enter the service menu at all)

You might also find that when in 4:3 mode bright areas of the picture will cause the sides of the picture to curve slightly, this happens on most widescreens I have witnessed anyway. You would be very lucky indeed to buy a widescreen with perfect geometry IMHO.

hope this helps

Thanks Tom,

I`m sure I can put up with it, just wanted to make sure I hadn`t bought a dud. As I say, apart from that it`s an excellent TV.

Chris.

Yeah Chris, the JVC is a nice tv, and with the extra warranty even better. I bought the philips6006 you mentioned, and am happy with it but had a few geometry issues myself, which I had to sorted out.

enjoy

Read these posts and I am interested in the remote / service menu option, if available. Do you know how you would activate this?

I have had both the 28PW6006 and the AV28T5EKS, the Philips had a tube fault and I had to have months of hassle with Currys to get a refund.

Have to say the JVC is a better experience / TV `out of the box` but the Philips was a nice set when it worked without patches!

As Tom mentions, you would indeed be lucky to get a WS without any geometry problems, the Philips `flared` at the top and bottom of the tube with extreme brightness in 4:3 (a little like the problem U mentioned) although the JVC does not seem to exhibit this tendency, there is a (minor) geometrical `issue` in 4:3, which is not easily spotted.

(However, as I am sure many of you will agree, once you notice it, it is easy to remind yourself of it and you are `drawn` to looking at it! :) )

Mind you, I got my JVC from Comet and it was £390 with a 3yr warranty - it was the display model and the back was missing off the remote - they allowed me to pinch another back from another dispaly model! Anyway, once I`d got it home and cleaned it, it was pristine.

I`d sure be interested in that service menu though.

You`re right about being drawn to any imperfections in the geometry W as once you spot something it`s almost impossible not to get irritated by it. I should know, as I`d spent hours trying to perfect the geometry on mine.

AS for the service menu for the JVC I can`thelp you there but try the what video&tv forum as that may help you.

Thanks Tom,

`Info` & `Mute` get you into the menu - not sure what to do next!
