Scan firmware upgrade

londonbabe (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 29th November 2000, 10:53

Big thanks to Microstar for sending me this.

Results are fixed the pulsing brightness problem (was this macrovision related?) - all dvds now play beautifully.

can fast forward mp3 files (though you can`t hear them til you press play again, and it skips through them at a huge rate)

no macro - hurrah!

what a pain in the arse those new codes are though. still it looks like the old "debug" region code IS still there on the hidden menu.

However, it still won`t play my audio cds properly. Guess it has to go back then.

The pulsating brightness (0.5Hz) was indeed Macrovision.

Anyhow, glad it worked for you - it worked fine for me. Nice to have a machine that can be upgraded so easily. I`m now eagerly awaiting the long MP3 filenames upgrade. The Scan will then be the Number 1 budget machine, without a doubt.
Is your audio CD problem confined to one or two discs or is it a general problem? I`ve not had any problems, but there again I`ve only played one or two audio CD`s; most of my music is on MP3`s now.

We are working on the region change instructions to make it simpler.
Also long file names on mp3 playback as well.Expect a new firmware
for this in january.

I think you are being rather harsh, DaveyG.

It is true that Scan may not have the best customer support, but they seem to have worked really hard to make the SC-2000 into a number one budget player. How many other companies have released a firmware upgrade in the way that Scan have? In the past I have had problems with big companies like Dixons, and I`m currently involved in a argument with Comet over a new Bosch dishwasher that seems to have a design fault (which they are trying to charge me over £40 to fix).
Scan are a relatively small co. and I respect the fact that Nelley comes here, acknowledges shortcomings and tries to make ammends. You won`t get that from the Dixons of this world.

fair point, but it says a lot that he has to. it`s next to impossible trying to get through to customer services, and when you have it`s 50-50 whether anything happens.

Someone mentioned mp3 distortion on the right channel - I noticed that too, thinking about it.

Could somebody please explain how to get on a distribution list for firmware upgrades ?

I bought a SC2000 today (1/12/00), and don`t seem to be able to disable the macrovision. Any ideas ?

Email me on yellen[at]roF.ku.oc.nacs an update.
Also the mp3 distortion we are looking into. Its the usual
story. We sort one problem out and then another crops up.But we
will never give up on improving the player as time goes on.

I`ve also got the sc-2000 player from the new new new new new batch (01/12/00) and can`t get the macrovision disabled. What version firmware do these players use and what`s the key combination to disable macrovision?

Thanks
