Thanks for the replies, however after living with this player for a couple of days, I decided i couldn`t live with it any more & off it went, back to Argos under their 16 day returns policy. Truly awful picture quality. Got myself a Thomson DTH4000, which is a Samsung 511 clone. Great picture quality.

I can`t believe that the odd one or two people on these forums that say that the Hitachi picture isn`t very good. It really p****s me off, who the hell do you think you are? Some sort of DVD picture quality specialist. As far as I am concerned, it`s not the output from the DVD player it`s how the TV interprets it. If you`ve got a c**p TV then what the hell do you expect?

I have had a Samsung 709, a Wharfedale 750s and a LG 3200e. The Hitachi`s picture is far better than all of them put together, it has an excellent Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder, multi-region, macrovision-free. As far as the price goes, it`s an absolute steel.

Also, turning off the Audio Dithering improves picture quality ten-fold!

There can be a number of reasons why a picture isn`t as good as it could be, not necessarily just down to the TV either.

It is sometimes worth upgrading connection cables (although I wouldn`t necessarily advocate dead expensive SCART leads - IXOS are probably the best ones before prices get a little silly).

It may also be the case that the DVD player is using an old firmware version, and just needs an upgrade - most budget players have had countless amounts of upgrades in the last 12 months (just ask Scan or Sampo owners !!)

Similarly, there may be an inferior chipset used in the player - the ESS4318 which is used in some players may result in some picture glitches.

I think it`s impossible to say there is one thing (e.g. a `cheap` TV) that causes people to say they don`t like the picture. Probably the most important one is personal taste.

I think that the people who say they`re not too pleased with the Hitachi obviously had genuine reasons to return the players.

Hi,

It`s all very well saying that, but to say it is `Truly Awful` is very harsh indeed. How the hell do you rate `Truly Awful`? What are you relating that remark against?

Why so upset ? If you like it, fair enuff.

Obviously Trickster didn`t and admittedly may have used an over-zealous turn of phrase to state the picture quality didn`t meet with his expectations.

Calm down, FantaC - this is how flame wars start on threads !!!

Hi,

Seems I`ve upset a few people with this thread. If you own an Hitachi 505 & are happy with the picture then that`s great. I`m just saying that I wasn`t & rather than live with something I wasn`t happy with, I returned it. I`m no picture expert, but having owned a Panasonic a100, Toshiba 2109 and a Thomson 3600, I reckoned the picture quality on the Hitachi just wasn`t up to the quality of those other players. Granted it plays cdr`s mp3`s etc, but i``d rather have a better quality picture, which the Thomson certianly has.

You haven`t upset me with the thread at all. I just can`t understand how people can make sweeping statements like that. It`s like saying a particular video player plays the same video better in one than it does in another one(How can that be? Why isn`t that the same for a DVD player?). I know your going to say....! "Firmwares, chipsets, drive speed, dual laser pickup etc all play a big part in the quality of playback". I mean, you only said you had it for a couple of days. What sort of timescale is that to judge something? (You must have been about an inch from your TV)

Surely a higher priced DVD player isn`t any better(picture wise) than a lower end DVD player. It has to be how the particular DVD player interprets the disc it is playing. I know the higher end players have fancy audio extra`s and extra knobs and buttons, but how the hell does that justify the price being charged?(That is probably another issue.....!)

For example, say two companies launched a DVD player at the same time using the same type of technology and selling at an equivelant price. Yet they are two distinctly different machines, and yet, I can guarantee that some lovely person will say that one is better than the other. I give up, the people that say these things are no better than the Film critics that slate a particular film when in fact it is quite excellent!!!!!!
