How to figure out a hack...

DEfusion (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 3rd July 2003, 14:45

Are there any basic rules as to how to work out a hack yourself, is it possible to do or are all hack that are floating around just ones leaked from the manufacturers etc.

I`m asking because I really want to hack a Matsui 1400 TV/DVD combi but can`t find one anywhere. Are there any starting points?

Can anyone help?

Most (if not all) publicly available hacks were leaked from the manufacturers. It`s in their best interests after all - hackability is a big selling point.

Assuming you don`t want to get into the really heavy stuff (reverse engineering, or disassembling the firmware code) then here`s my suggested course of action:

1) Phone up Matsui and ask them ;-)

2) Failing that, open it up and see what decoder/controller chipset it has - try and find details of another player which uses the same chipset, then see if there`s a hack available for that. If so, then chances are, the hack will work for your Matsui too.

Sony et al. tend to use their own custom chipsets, but the cheaper no-name players (and some of the branded units) are based around off-the-shelf chips from the likes of C-Cube, SGS-Thomson and others.

3) If you`re successful in this endeavour, make sure you post it here (you should probably e-mail one of the DVD Reviewer staff too) so that other 1400 owners can benefit from it.

i found the technika 300 hack by trying every hack for players from the same manufactuer or sister companies or players that use hacks from other manufactuers if this doesent work or you get fed up as it took me 8 hours, i would call Matsui on the helpline in the manual and tell them that your your region 2 discs wont play, as the machine tells you wrong region. You never know they may tell you the hack(or replace it for a shiny one <ggg>
