Page 1 of PC Keeps Crashing...
General Forum
My laptop frequently crashes when I`m running peer to peer programs like Grokster and WinMX. Sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes longer.
What I want to know is will this damage my PC if it`s crashing twice a day?
Thanks

Possible it could cause problems with the system files, especially if it crashes while wirting to the disk. Wont normally kill the disk but may stop you booting if it keeps happening too much, which will mean a reinstall. What OS are you using? Have you run the updates and downloaded all the latest drivers for your PC?
Have you got your virus software running?
If so the system scan, etc. can often cause p2p software to crash.

I have Norton AV Auto Protect Enabled + Norton Personal Firewall. I`ll try switching it off.
Thanks
Ross.
How old is it? It might be a hardware problem, although if it`s only on P2P software it probably wont be, does it happen if you download off the net?

The laptop is only 5 months old. It`s stable apart from when I`m running Grokster. I tried to disabling the AV software but that didn`t work. I`m thinking of wiping the HD and re-installing everything. I`ve been meaning to do this since I first bought it but never had the time.
Windows ME per chance?
With the info so far, I would say either a driver issue with the NIC or modem (I dont know how you connect). Or some script kiddy is having a go at you.
Update your drivers, and check your firewall settings and log any attempts to get access to or from the net. Then look out for any thing that should not be there.
May also be an idea to get your AV software up to date and do a full scan just incase a trojan has found its way on to your system.
Note: Given more information my opinion may well change.
And FYI: I to use these programs on XP PRO with Norton firewall & AV and have no such problems. I strongly recomend you do not shut them down other that to test if they are the source of the problem. Once you have done that get some sort of AV & FW back up and running.

My PC has started crashing recently too. This has only started since I started AOL 7.0! I have spoken to other AOL users and they are also experiencing problems.
