Upgrading a processor?

mathew2001 (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 26th May 2002, 20:19

I want to upgrade my processor, but I am not sure about the make/model etc of my current motherboard. Is there a way to check this out, and also to check the maximum processor it will go to?

Cheers!

Yep - have a look at Wim`s BIOS (http://www.wimsbios.com). Basically, you can identify your board from the BIOS ID string that comes up on screen during the boot process, and this site has a huge list of them.

Once you`ve found which board you have, you can visit the manufacturer`s site for info on which processors it supports, and so on.

Or how about typing in the BIOS name, version and date into Google (it`ll appear in the computer boot porocess). It should come up with some good results, including a link to the manufacturers website.

You may need to update the BIOS to the latest version to get the quoted maximum processor speed. Specs change as new products are released and your current BIOS may not support the higher speeds even if the hardware does.
