Hong Kong Dollars when I was there, and it was cheaper to get them there than here b4 u leave, as usual safer with Travellers cheques, i have never used them tho as u need to carry passport etc to change them. No idea about china but would imagine even more so with them....not even sure if u can get their currency here? dont remember seeing it although that may be to it being more expensive to go there so less visitors?

I do not know for China, but for HK, I used my Halifax  "Clarity" Credit card to withdraw cash from the airports` ATM. This works out the cheapest way of getting cash, but make sure that you pay back a liitle more (1.5%) than what you withdrew as soon as possible without waiting for the statement.
Cheaper than traveller cheques or getting HK dollars in UK.
