WHATS THE POINT OF BUYING DVD

bear (Elite) posted this on Friday, 17th November 2000, 14:24

Well there I was already to buy a DVD player and I thought well go on internet and read different reviews and then purchase one! Well it seems to me that most machines come over has unreliable and totaly unsuitable for todays user, I mean whats the point if it has not got macrovision defeat if I cant make a copy of a film onto a VHS then stuff them, also the reviews from magazines are only worth it in the way they tell you about features sockets and pheraps pic quality, just take a look at the scan reviews in the mags and then read what the people who have bought them say to see what I mean.
The only reviews that are worth a jot are the customer who has owned a machine for at least 12 months and are the samples that the mags review been tweeked at all.
I feel that I might as well buy a nicam 6 head video recorder at least I know the technology is proven and it wont be in the repair shop. Take a look at the Matsui review on this site and take a look at the same review on www.home-entertainment.co.uk and you will see why reviews aint worth a s***.

Dear Bear
You dont have to buy a DVD player based on a review only. Go check out a friends player or go to shop such as Audio-t.I have owned a sony player which has never given me problem in 18 months. As for copying to vhs once you have seen a picture and heard the sound on a good home cinema system you won`t want to!

"The only reviews that are worth a jot are the customer who has owned a machine"

Bear, the Matsui review on this site has actually been submitted by a Matsui owner!

I`m with you bear. Buying a DVD player in Britain ia akin to watching the Matrix.
We are all brainwashed into buying these so-called state-of-the-art boxes only to find out theyre a pile of s***.
Believe it or not, even the spectacular Mico has had its detractors!!!
I couldnt honestly recommend any player. If you wait a few months you will probably find many more useful add-ons but more probably you`ll find Macrovision Disable and multiregion a thing of the past.

Take the red pill and wake up in RIP-OFF Britain. Where all the reject electronic toasters finally come to rest.

I really don`t blame Bear for his points at all. At the end of the day it is a `suck it and see` kind of thing.

Ask yourself this, guys. Why did you buy a DVD player ?

I can`t remember the reason, just that overpowering need to HAVE one because. (yes, because. That`s all)

Having said that, I watch a DVD as opposed to a VHS and then I remember why.....top quality pics, sound, easy access scenes (when was the last time you said to your mate "Let`s watch the Bonnie Situation" on Pulp Fiction, wind the tape forward 112 minutes and end up halfway through the scene?), and less storage space for a DVD than a VHS!!! (I live in a small house, all right...)

It`s a shame that there have been dodgy budget players around (Carrot=Mico) because it fails the potential of a VHS killer.

DVD - we luv it....

Well, here`s where I become really unpopular..I`m gonna go AGAINST this posting!

"I mean whats the point if it has not got macrovision defeat if I cant make a copy of a film onto a VHS then stuff them"

Therefore, "If I can`t pirate copy the film, then I don`t want one" ??
Why would you want to take SVHS quality and dump it down to standard VHS?

"The only reviews that are worth a jot are the customer who has owned a machine for at least 12 months"

You are the Retail sector`s dream customer... wanna buy some of my clearance DVD players, `cos if it`s been out 12 months it been superceded probably TWICE.

"I feel that I might as well buy a nicam 6 head video recorder at least I know the technology is proven and it wont be in the repair shop"

Where did you get that from? I`ve had £600 + vcr`s faulty upon removal from their box! Reliability is a myth, you can hedge your bets on certain brands which are less likely to fail, but no electronic device can give 100% reliability guarantee.. otherwise Repair centres and Engineers would not be required.

You buy a DVD player because you want the quality it provides. some for the disc extras, but mostly for the smaller storage space, fantastic picture quality and incredible sound.
If you think a 6 head video can compete with that, then you should not buy a DVD.

(By the way, just as a point, 6 head VCR`s usually have 4 kick in on SP (3 video 1 audio) and the other 2 on LP, the 5th for picture and the other to improve the sound)

Well first point the reason I want to make a copy is to be able to watch the film on my VHS I still got i.e other room, bedroom ,and I am shure there are lots of people with holiday homes, caravans ECT.., I did not have a problem making copies of CDs on to cassettes for my car or walkman ....pheraps I should have thrown them all away and bought 3 more CD players, they allow you to make 1digitial copy on to minidisc or CDr-audio why not the same with DVDs we dont see the pop stars being thrown out there many mansions do we!. Also prices what they our in rip of Britian I think I should be intitled to make a copy for my own use! and no I dont intend selling copies on a boot store. (bet you qued all night for windows 2000 outside dixons)

Second point ,like most people I buy lots of electrical items and always read up on them and get reviews before I buy but I was so amazed at the number of faulty machines that people seem to have bought all different makes and retailers ,it just seems to me that most DVDs are trouble from start to finish you never see it with TVs VIDEOS and HI-FI reviews the reviews from the owners read like a horror storys, that is till you read the mags of course , the scan reviews did it for me!.

Third point yes after 12 months or sooner the models change so by the time a review from the owner is woth a jot the machine is gone.
that was my point!

fourth point . VHS pictures are not that crap and are by any stretch of the imagination are watchable. The main reason I wanted a DVD was for space and because of wear and tear on my films but the reviews of the people who have bought the machines have left me totaly amazed. I have never known an electrical item from different manafactures to give the owners so much trouble its seems its a case of technology before testing to me, my money is staying in my pocket till the owners reviews improve.

Yes I know but He gave picture quality 10 the other review gave it 2 ,hows that helping me some ones bullshiting and all it does is stop me from buying a DVD.
I keep harping on about the scan reviews but somthing is wrong somewhere when most of the mags can heap all that praise but those that part with their cash say that there a pile of s***, sombody should be asked why the mags did not have the same results!!
