Sky HD - Should I cancel?

Bezzawezza (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 12th August 2010, 07:37

Currently got Sky HD with sports and the entertainment channels. No Movies as got Lovefilm for that.
I am debating with myself though whether its worth the extra £10 a month for HD which is essentially just for Sports. Therefore, the Sports are costing me £30 a month because as I understand it, you still get BBC HD and Channel 4 HD even if you cancel the HD. Is that right?
The £10 a month saving wouldn`t change my world but finding it hard to justify the spend.
Any thoughts anyone?
If I rang to take it off would they offer me any deal? Bearing in mind they have only recently given me free movies for 3 months before I rang again and cancelled them.

I think the problem with SKY is that it is so expensive to take on everything, so you have to make compromises.

I did away with the sports and the films years ago due to cost, and just have the standard SKY+ package at £23 a month, which seems to keep going up in price each year.

Unfortunately I live out in the country now, so satallite is my only option for multichannels.

AS for HD, well that was never the goverments intention to have it priced seperately, but the greed of SKY won out, so it has not been taken up as quickly as they would have liked, due to everyone holding back till its just part of the normal package and not an extra.

I think Virgin has now classed HD as normal, and included it in with their packages with no extra price, as it should have been in the first place.

Rant over :D

I haven`t got the HD pack (just entertainment and music) but can`t watch any of the HD channels the last time I looked (only a month or so ago)

When I checked this I did it by pulling out the card on my pals HD box and all channels that were HD but not Sky, ie: BBC etc, all decrypted fine.

All Sky HD channels stopped obviously.

I have everything.
SKY HD with every possible package in the living room.
Then SKY+ with mirror package (minus HD channels obviously) in the bedroom.
I`m £76 a month, which I really don`t think is bad at all.
I`d rather pay less, of course I would, but for the quantity and quality of programming and the excellent functionality of the equipment, I think it`s good value.
I class SKY as a necessity, I really wouldn`t want to do without it, ever.
In that respect, I don`t know at what price level I would say "I`m out".

With a cancelled or Freesat from sky card, you will get in HD. BBC (multi) HD,  ITV HD, Channel 4 HD, Channel 5 HD,  & Luxe TV. Thats 5 HD channels. BBC 1 HD is also on it`s way.

Having received a HD receiver with an active card (for 2 weeks) on HD, I found most of the Sky content was upscaled HD. Discovery,Sky 1 etc etc, I was very disappointed.  I wouldn`t give them tuppence for it.
I have a Diema Sports card that cost just under £200-00 for 12-00 months & I get near enough all the football including 3-00pm kick offs.

Okay whats a Diema Sport card? Is that HD? (ie is it a fair comparison to make against Sky Sports?)
Essentially then I am paying £10 a month for Sky Sports HD channels and Sky HD channels like Sky 1, Discovery etc. All the terrestrial HD channels would still work is my understanding here. I`m willing to be proven wrong though.
Essentially then, do I want to pay £10 a month for watching football in HD? I don`t know is the answer.

Do you mean it was an HD channel, but it wasn`t an actual HD transmission?
That used to happen a lot.
Still happens, I can`t deny it.
But proper HD content is becoming more and more common.
And proper HD transmissions on Discovery are astonishingly good.

Maybe your telly`s just crap (lights touch paper and runs away....) ;)

And @ Bezzwezza.
I would say £10 a month for HD football is worth it.
Even if you only watch 2 games a month, an extra £5 per game is worth it.
But only if you can afford it.
I`m not encouraging people to over-stretch themselves for HD.

A Diema card is Bulgarian. Unfortunately it is not in English, so I just put on radio 5 for the commentary. If you have Sky sports you will also get rugby, cricket etc, you will only get the football with the Diema. I don`t know if it will work in HD equipment. As a side note there are about 5 channels including a SD discovery channel that is in English with Bulgarian subs, also somenaughty stuff. There is also a Digialb card that was around the same price & that is in English, the last I checked it also did other sports as well as the paid for boxing in the UK. I know they do it in HD but I imagine it will be more money & I think you have to have a matched receiver, so probably not worth it unless you are a dedicated football lover.

Yes the actual HD channels. Now they are turned off.

It probably is, it was the LCD I was watching it on. I have to say that Luxe for all it`s content is by far the best HD channel for picture.
