Tekkies please!!

stefmcd (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 16th January 2002, 20:55

Why when I click on some download links does the quicktime logo appear on my screen?
After a period of time it turns a grey colour and nothing happens.
The only way I`ve been able to get round it is to right click and `save target as..` but this option is not always available because the `target` comes up as an html page and not an executable file.
I have tried the s***ty microsoft knowledge base but I would have been as well consulting my senile 91 year old granny.
I have tried uninstalling quicktime but this makes no difference.
Help me please.

to your first question it could be, that the computer sees the file as a quicktime format, but once its downloaded it can`t find the write codec.

The file is still associated with the Quicktime player/viewer.

Try installing the latest version of Quicktime - you can set the options in it to which filetypes it should associate itself with. You can leave the rest as the default ones. You`ll frequently find that when installing programs like this they grab the association for files because they want you to use their software to view the file. It can be quite amusing watching Windows Media Player and Quicktime fighting over each other to be associated with the different file formats.

If the filetype you are clicking on is definitely a QT file, though you`re obviously going to have to view it using Quicktime. Windows media player doesn`t support QT files and this is probably why you`re getting the grey box and nothing more when you click on the link.

I had the same problem a few months ago. When trying to download some software, when I clicked on download, an Apple logo came up, and it wouldn`t go any further. I contacted the firm who`s software it was a t first, thinking it was a problem at their end, then I tried downloading something else and it did the same. So thought it was a problem with Quicktime. Contacted Apple, no response. Loads of people were reporting the same problem, I dunno what happened on the net to cause it. In the end I found the answer by searching Apples` forum on their web site.

Solution copied below:

This fix is for users who get the message:
"quicktime is missing software to perform this operation-unfortunately it is not available on the quicktime server".
This statement tells us that we need to download using a different opener since it is not programmed in QT ,however the application is assuming authority to run download screens rather than our default dialog boxes we used to get.

To solve this problem we need to delete certain keys from our registries. Since the registry is not on our desktop you will have to create a shortcut.

Do the following:
1.)right click any open space on your desktop
2.)click NEW
3.)it will now ask for the application-type regedit.exe
4.)now it will ask for a name. Give it something simple and easy to remember like REGISTRY EDITOR or use the default name.

Now that you have the short cut you`ll need to double click it to open the registry. The page will have entries that look similar to this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ...
click on the + - tabs next to this one to open more + - tabs.
Click and open the tabs in the following order to get to those nasty keys(folders) we need to delete.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\plugins\extension\(mp3,.exe,.mov,.wav,.etc.)
The ones I have put in ( ) are the ones we need to delete one-by-one!
To delete do the following:
1.)single click one of the above forementioned.
2.)go to the toolbar at the top and click edit.
3.)now click delete and repeat the steps for the other .mov,.exe,etc. files one by one...you`re done!!!"

Can`t take the credit for it. I only searched it out, but it brought a big grin to my face too, when I found it. I kept it in a file in case it ever happens again. Glad it worked for ya! :-)
