Disney Full Frame Dvds - Is it worth it?

richieiselvis (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 16th January 2002, 14:06

I`ve just bought the aristocats and dumbo from play.com for a very good price. They are both full frame 4:3 and then I started to wonder if it was such a good deal. Does anyone here know if it is likely that they will get the full treatment in the next few years and come out in 16:9 (they must of been shown at the cinema in widescreen afterall)

Widescreen, in cinema terms, is a relatively new phenomenon. Almost all films made prior to the mid-1950s are in the 4:3 (Academy) ratio, and Dumbo, released in 1941, certainly falls into this category. When you watch it on your full-frame DVD, you`re seeing it exactly as it was shown in the cinema more than 60 years ago.

Aristocats (1970) is a different story however - it was originally 1.77:1 I think, so you`re not seeing the full picture with the current DVD. Maybe Disney will release a 16:9 version at some point in the future.

THe back of the Aristocats DVD says it is in it`s original release format. Surely that`s wrong though. IMDB definitely says 1.77:1 but also has been known to be wrong. Anyone know for sure ?
