Page 1 of Placing radiators under the window - am i being thick?

Its recommended that radiators should be placed under windows but logic tells me that the heat from the radiators goes straight out of the window and is thus ineffective.....can anyone explain to me why they should be placed there please? :B

Hot air rises and cold air from around the window, or a draught, falls and the hot air gets pushed out into the room.

They convect heat up and so reduce drafts. Apparently. I`m not sure how relevant this is if you`ve got double glazing though...

:B Your both right, rads were placed under windows in`t t`olden days for a couple of reasons, the main one was to act like a warm air curtain, heat rises and any draughts from the wooden windows, would theoretically be "warmed" by the rising air, so reducing the draught effect, double glazing can create its own draughts even though there are no apparent gaps in the frames etc, the warm air already in the room hits the top of the window and is rapidly cooled by the large expanse of glass and "flows" or "drops" downwards, on a really cold night u can put ur hand at the bottom and actually feel a slight draught if your heating is off, second reason, rads on other walls may have been covered by a 3 seater settee or the like, thus reducing the rads heat output...

Just make sure your curtains dont actually cover the rad when closed.... :D :B

Tis common practise though to see rads not under windows these days cos rad can be quite sexc looking these days if you want to spend the money...

Whenever we decorate a room we move the rads under a window otherwise it is wasted wall space. As long as you have a decent central heating system that is correctly pressurised, your rads are beld and you have double glazing it shouldn`t be a problem.

As mentioned above, don`t have curtains that cover your rads, but do try and close curtains in the evenings to keep warmth in as even double glazing will let some cold in and warm out.

Out of the 7 homes I`ve owned, 6 have had radiators placed under the windows.
One house didn`t and it was a total pain in the arse, from a furniture point of view.

Agree, Bowfer. New houses always have radiators under windows. Houses that have had central heating put in after they were built often just have them stuck wherever is easiest.
