Page 1 of just left laptop on train!
General Forum
Hi, i left my bag with sensitive information and laptop on a train earlier today, i`ve called the lost and found department and they said they`d call me if anything was handed in etc.
This was a pretty exspensive laptop, so i won`t be holding my breath, therefor i was wondering if it doesn`t turn up after a certain time, can i treat it as theft and report it to police and look at the train`s in built cctv. (which a sticker on the carriage claimed it did have)
Oh god, what a nightmare!

I very much doubt it as you`ve already said
"just left laptop on train! ".
Which i take it you explained to the lost property dept.

Absolutely not... that would be making a false report... you can still report it to the police as Lost Property, and record of this will be made should it turn up, it would be useful of you had the serial numbers also!

You don`t work for the MOD do you?
I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

making a false report.
Technically it`s not really false as he hasn`t lost it, he`s left it on the train. Someone will find the laptop and because it`s not theirs, will hand it in, if they don`t then they are stealing it.
Just my thoughts on the situation. :/

making a false report. technically yes he is making a false report is he states its been stolen... as it clearly hasn`t he has lost it... items are handed in every day to British Rail, Police Stations, across the country... it only becomes theft when someone assumes the rights of ownership! and because it has been left on a train you cannot presume someone will have stolen it!
Insurance companies take a very dim view of this, you are better staying with having reported it lost and claiming that way, as if teh insurance company check with British Rail, they would find a fraudulent claim for theft?

I had a similar situation a couple of months ago.
In the rigmarole of getting kids and suitcases out of my car at a hotel, I left my satnav unit lying on the roof of the car.
By the time I remembered and ran back outside, some thieving Sunderland scum had lifted it.
To report, or not to report, that is the question.
At the time, I just cursed my carelessness and bought another one.
I still have the receipt for the original one, there`s bugger all stopping me putting a claim in at any time, if I were that way inclined.
I know for a fact the police won`t come to investigate it if I claim it`s stolen.
They didn`t come to investigate an attempted break in at my home, so why would they bother with this?
They`d just hand me a crime reference and I could claim off the insurance.
I`d worry about a laptop though, given that I use internet banking and stuff. :/

I had about 4 coppers in total come to me when my sat nav was nicked.
