Page 1 of Ski Boots - Home or Abroad...

I`m thinking of buying some Ski Boots this evening before I go to the Manchester Chill Factore with some friends from work.

My mate back home thinks I`d be better off waiting until I went away to France next month and bought them there.

Is the saving really going to be that much and will it justify the time I`ll save buying them over here plus all the heat molding etc... they`ll do here? (not 100% sure I`ll get that over there)

I`m not overly bothered about saving £20 if it`s going to mean a load of hassle over there!

Any advice would be appreciated.

Given the Euro exch rate right now you won`t save that much anyway.
I would personally buy them here given the fact you`ll be able to try them out tonight and then get modifications made easily if you need to.
Its never that easy in France given the language barrier, whilst a lot of the ski shops will have people speaking a good level of English, its never as easy as it is with a local place.

I can`t remember the exact prices, but when I was in Les Arcs last week I remember thinking that the gear they had wasn`t that cheap (apart from a few bits of stuff on sale - but even then with the exch rate it wasn`t that cheap that made me think it`d be worth it).

Also - one of my mates reckoned that most of the smaller shops in the ski resorts didn`t do the heat molding anyway. Just remember to where the right socks ;)

If something were to go wrong with them I would want the back up of a local store. Saying that I bought my board in the states. But that was years ago and it was $2 to the pound.

Yeah, think I will be buying them tonight. My friend was telling me that Snow & Rock do a European price match so their prices are pretty much standard across Europe.

Just been told you can`t use your boots for 2 hours after the moulding! Looks like I`ll be leaving work even earlier! :D

There is an advantage to buying in at the resort as you can take them back in for adjustments after a day on the slopes. Often worth it. The sacrafice you make is there is less choice of boot in the resorts, but they will have good stuff, just less of it.

Its a tough choice though, buying at the resort you will get advice from someone who probably skis every day, staff here may ski twice a year.

Also, worry far more about the right type and fit of boot than the price :)

I don`t go skiing often I have got boot hire included in my package. I assume they will be crap but it should be okay for a week.

I agree with Nick, you should expect better advice in a resort. There is also the incentive for them that they know you will be back the following day if they sell you cr*p!

There is good and bad everywhere but in 30+ years I have only ever been stitched up by a UK ski shop. Purchases in France, Austria and USA have always been good.
