having problem with my Sky reception

jean88 (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 16th October 2007, 21:01

For the past few weeks some of the channels have started to malfunction. The picture on the TV pixelates, stalls, jerks etc. Just called Sky but as I am out of warranty with the box they ask me to pay £65 to send someone over (which i refused straight away).

I have moved the dish a few weeks ago because of building work, but did not notice any malfunctions. It tends to do it in the evening (well p***ed off because I was watching Spooks tonight and I had to stop the channel). This does not do it on all channels, so it is not a problem with my tv. Signal strenght is good.

Anyone knows what could be the problem. Thanks
JC

Was it or had it been raining by any chance?

First thing that springs to mind is water ingress into the cable\connector since you moved the dish.

I hate answering the phone at work - It disturbs my sleep.

Hi Rassilon, yes it is raining actually, but why does it affect only a few channels? [water ingress into the cable\connector] Are you talling about where the cable connect to the LNB? If so what is the solution? Thanks very much

Try some self amalgamating tape or LNB rubber boots like these , make sure there`s no water in the cable before you seal it though.

Also check cable for damage ie exposed metal around the area where it was disturbed.

Cable inner & outer should be nice & shiny or after time dirty copper colour.

If the copper is green\blue, then that section needs be trimmed back & remade as water has got in.

I agree with the above but as an ex installer my first thought is the dish is slightly out of alignment, probably since it was moved. There are a number of satellites `up there` & some are stronger than others. If the channel you want is on one of the weaker transponders/satellites you would have to have the dish spot on, especially in rain/cloud. In Spain for instance (I know it is slightly different) you can pick up some channels on a 1 mtr dish but some of the others may have to have a 2.8 mtr dish to get any signal.

I put sky on the other day and only had 2 channels.

Done the usual though and it sorted it.
