Page 1 of drill recommendation

Need to change my cordless drill, can anyone recommend a good one without spending a forture (can`t afford Makita, DeWalt etc). Was looking at the Wickes one for just under £40.

Get a Bosch. Some of the cheapie drills are OK but they can fail early & you can`t get parts.
The Bosch has a better chuck system than any other, it is much easier to tighten than all the other makes. Even if it means getting a 14v or 18 v Bosch, it will outperform the cheaper 24 volt drills. You should get a decent Bosch at £40-00 but even if it means another £10-00 it will be worth it.

If you want one for keen DIYer type use, then the B&D Firestorm Drills are awesome. I have 4 drills and about 9 batteries! They often come in crazy cheap twin pack type deals. The only downside is the charger which tends to get a bit tempremental over time, but the drills are faultless.

Thanks guys, will be looking for one that comes with a spare battery and a recharge time no longer than 3 hours. I am not a professional but for example last time I was doing my decking I had to stop and switch to my hammer drill (not cordless) and it was a real pain.
B&D, Bosch seem to be a good choice, saw that Amazon sells one (no spare battery though) but free P&P. Will have a look at ScrewFix too and see what I come with.

Jean. It really needs to be a 1 hour charge. Pop down to B & Q & try the Bosch chuck against any other make. It can always be undone easily, whereas the other type of chuck can sometimes be very hard, if you`ve done it up tight. You are right in that you need a drill with 2 batteries. I have seen Bosch at that price but it is when there is a special offer.

Got to disagree with that , I`ve got a Bosch hammer drill that cost me over £100 and is completely s**t, it`s stuck on hammer and the keyless chuck is awful , should have bought a cheapie at least I wouldn`t feel so let down if I had to bin it.

Without more information it is difficult to answer that statement. How old is the drill? Was it misused? Did you contact Bosch & what did they say?

I have refurbished a few houses & have used other good makes & also cheapie makes but at the end of the day the Bosch are the best & most reliable that I have used, of the non professional makes/models. The Bosch is the one that I would trust most & their chuck is head & shoulders better than the others. As I said before try in B & Q or similar.

Another +1 for the B&D FIrestorm drills. I got one in an Argos clearance sale and it`s been great. Wish I could get a cordless circular saw to match so I can use the same batteries!
